In this thread, the Race Committee will post NOTAMS. These may include rules clarifications or the addition of new aircraft or other changes that may affect Airmen. Please keep this thread clean by posting your comments and questions in the "Questions" thread.

Thanks,

NOTAM (4-6-12)
Golden Age only. Here is a clarification of the use of ADF/NDB radio navaids and celestial navigation on the West Arica route. Pilots may use these navigation aids on the route from Europe to Casablanca—reflecting the availability of good maps of Mediterranean coast and the populated parts of Morocco. However, from Casablanca to Dakar, they may use those radio/celestial navaids only if they remain along the coastline (that is, within 100nm of the coast). Further inland, they are flying over the uncharted Sahara—where all flights must rely on Dead Reckoning from beginning to end. After reaching Dakar and departing to the south and southeast, pilots may use ADF/NDB radio and celestial navigation as this region has been reasonably well mapped by the French authorities.

For routes between Casablanca and Dakar, pilots should check the great circle route from departure to destination to be sure they are "along the coastline" if they want to use radio/celestial navigation. (For example, one cannot use these navigation aids when flying directly from GMMC-GOOY. Such a flight would require Dead Reckoning from takeoff to landing.)

Note also that the Cape-to-Cape rules treat the availability of radio navigation aids and celestial sextant navigation as equivalent. Of course, in fact they are not the same thing. In a future event, the use of celestial navigation may get its "time in the sun."

NOTAM 4-6-12 #2 Attachments

The attachments here at SOH have gotten a bit "wonky". We can't guarantee that anything attached will stay there. In that light, it's recommended that pilots utilize the Flight Tracking feature of the Duenna. To do this look at the flight's Flightlog text file. Near the bottom will be some lines that look like this:

Copy and past the URL to your post. Example:

http://fs-duenna.com/flights/ShowFlight.php?detail=flight&value=fmODeMlJOSbA6eVVOuWwKEDrMI

And you should be done. Clicking on that link will give flight tracking details and a copy of the Duenna verification graphic. Consider this cheap insurance in case of the unthinkable.

NOTAM 4-7-12 Airman's Guide

The Airman's Guide to the 2012 Cape-to-Cape Challenge is now available. This document describes the environment in which pilots will fly. See the attachment.

Wow, that's good stuff, MM, thanks for putting it together.

An excellent narrative Mike ... well paced and quite captivating.

I have developed some rather poor reading habits ever since Al Gore invented the internet ... but I couldn't stop reading this.

Great details of very interesting and never known (for me at least) "goings on" during this period ... Mr. Cotton lead a life even us sim pilots have to envy.

Rich with all sorts of other Tid-Bits as well ... for those of us that are intrigued with aviation history or just general history of those times that was woven into this fine Guide.

I've always been drawn to this era right up through WW II ... thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning ... and the photos ... outstanding finds!

Thank you for every minute you spent on this collection ... and "Hat's in the air" for how well you put it all together.

I'll be reading this again for the interest as well as reference for that matter.

Superb Mike!

NOTAM 4-10-12 Alpine Scoring

A clarification on the Alpine Scoring.

A pilot may not double count a bonus for hand-flying the LSMI-LIPB/LIPB-LSMI leg. (A pilot gets 15 minutes for connecting the two airports, but not an additional 15 minutes for hand-flying to a "fuel stop.")

Here is a "typical" Alpine score.

15 min for EDDF-LSMI (Hand-flying from a fuel stop to LSMI)
2 hrs for landing at LIPB
15 min for LSMI-LIPB (Hand-flying the connection between LSIM and LIPB)
15 min for LSMI-LIPB (Under 12,000 bonus ceiling)
15 min for LIPB-LIML (Hand-flying from LIPB to a fuel stop)

The total available bonus for the Alpine portion of the event is 3.0 hours.

Note also that all legs into and out of LSMI and LIPB are to be hand-flown (no autopilot). Pilots should disable the autopilot on the Duenna tracker. (If you forget to tick the Duenna box, simply re-fly the leg--ignore the "unauthenticated leg" and incur no penalty.)

NOTAM 5-9-12 FINAL DEADLINE EXTENDED

The deadline for the Cape-to-Cape Cup has been extended to 1200 UTC May 29th (the day after US Memorial Day). We have a number of pilots still making good progress but not yet near the finish line.

Miss Nellie and Ms Murphy Monroe have agreed. Miss Nellie said, with a shrug of her small shoulders, "The proposed extension is in the rules. And if the fellows want to finish the race, we'll be happy to continue monitoring them. Besides, at this time of year London is starting to brighten and bloom." She winked.
