This week marks the Second RAeS Icarus Cup, a competition for Human Powered Aircraft. 5 teams from across the UK have met at Sywell Aerodrome, near Northampton, to compete for several different events including:

1) Duration
2) A 200m sprint race
3) A 1km race
4) A slalom course
5) A takeoff performance and landing accuracy task
6) Distance around a triangular course

Of the 5 teams 3 have flown so far (Airglow, Betterfly and Southampton University Human Powered Aircraft) with 2 more hoping the weather will be right for a flight today (Bath University Human Powered Aircraft and John Edgely's EA12). Unfortunately Airglow suffered damage in a landing accident on Wednesday morning and are attempting the repair their damage.

This year the event has been FAI approved and is essentially the UK HPA Nationals, with the RAeS hoping that next year's event may attract teams from a number of countries and become a world championships.
