3" Mortar

Pat Pattle

SOH-CM-2026
..and now for something completely different..
I've been watching YouTube vids about British Mortars, Bombards, Projectors and the PIAT.

There are no mortars in CFS3 as far as I can tell so I've made one as a test. I need to find a better firing sound for it

Hopefully more types to follow.

Sorry but I have no video capture software at the moment!

Ps. The figures were made by Craig 'Viso' Murray for the W40 project.

Does it work? Will the AI use indirect fire? That would be a major advancement if so!

My father served in WWII as a British Royal Marine Commando and part of his duties/training (along with being a Bren Carrier driver, demolitions specialist (he was part of the team that blew the bottoms out of the concrete block ships during the D-Day landings) and an anti-aircraft gunner on-board ships) was as a 3" mortar team leader and apparently when they were training they held the record for the most mortar bombs in the air at the same time before the first exploded (21) and that record stood for several weeks until some other team finally beat them.

Ha, that's a fun thing!!

I didn't see any rounds landing. But if the round is relatively heavy, the muzzle speed low and CFS3 tracks it long enough, it might be all that's needed to see the impact from the parabolic trajectory... Just don't put too many rounds in the air if the flight time is long.

Wow, that's fascinating! Some rate of fire too! 😎

They do land ok but yes, too many rounds upsets CFS3. The round also disappears after only a few seconds which I have to look into.

firing sound ?

That's a huge mortar! Must be 5" or 6" 😯
I'll have a look around for something smaller, but thank you Andre 👍

The 4.2" mortar was originally developed to fire chemical rounds. This larger than typical mortar size was needed to contain a useful volume of filler.
