354h Fighter Group problems, maybe

I installed this large work on a clean CFS2 load. I usually copy some campaign files into the mission section for testing. I tried the Biak 1 and Biak 2 missions. Biak 2 calls for bombing by the P38 group...but the P38 involved is formatted for 'Guns Only'.

One thing I found frustrating: when I open the CFG file for an aircraft (doesn't matter which) to make some edits, I get an "Access Denied" message when I try to 'Save' a newly edited Panel file, for example. ?????

I also did another Mission test with another Campaign mission (frankly don't remember which, maybe the second mission of the first tour?) and in spite of serious control of a lean throttle and low prop settings, when I warped I ended up with zero fuel short of the target. Maybe this is a 'warp' thing. Or does the aircraft need fuel tanks and does not have them? Dunno.

The edit problem is your UAC in Vista or Win7. Open "My Computer" and drill down to the folder that all of your CFS2 installs are in. Then, right click that folder and go to "Properties". Then click on the "Security" tab. Highlight your profile and click the "Edit" tab. Then under the "Allow" column click "Full Control" check box. Then, after it runs its course, go into the "Advanced settings" tab. There, once again highlight your profile and click the "Auditing" tab. Then click "Continue". Type in your profile name and click check names. Make sure that the "apply to subfolders and files" is checked and click on the "Full Control" check box and then click OK. This will give you permissions to change any file in your CFS2 installs.

On the Warping issue, just before you Warp, cut your throttle to 0. Then, hit X and be ready to go back up to 66% or whatever you fly at when you come out of warp. That should save your fuel. The other thing you can do is in the CFS2 settings, uncheck auto fuel management. Before you go into warp, make sure you are set on your drop tanks for fuel. You may come out of warp empty, but you can then drop the empty drop tanks and switch over to main and R&L fuel tanks.

Hope this all helps.

?? The missions you are naming (Biak 1 and Biak 2) are from the 9th Fighter Squadron campaign, not the 354th Fighter Group campaign. If you are trying to fly these missions in a 354th FG campaign install, you will not have the correct P-38 model loaded in the AIRCRAFT folder, and you won't have the correct scenery to fly in either.

No idea what you are doing with the cfg file - aircraft or panel? Use the CFGEdit program if you are working on panel configs and you should not have any issues.

I can't address your last item very well since you don't say which mission. However, you should not run out of fuel on any of the long distance missions in either campaign.

First of all, all of the campaign aircraft flight models have been designed to give the planes their corrct range capabilities. If you have substituted some other model, all bets are off because it probably has a flight model that has short range.

Second and very important, make sure you have the "auto fuel managment" box unchecked in the CFS2 Settings/Realism Settings page. CFS2 auto management will run you out of fuel every time.

Third, every long range mission in either campaign has drop tanks assigned to the aircraft - that is, if you are using the campaign aircraft. Make sure you start to use them as soon as you get into the air. Throttle settings help, but you have to have a good long distance flight model to start with or settings will not be enough.

Finally, every time you come out of warp, CFS2 will have switched your tanks back to internal tanks. You need to switch back to your drop tanks again to use up your external tanks first.

Well, I think I obviously confused several things.
CK - You are right, the Biak missions are not 354th missions. I'll go back and do the missions all over. No, I have not moved aircraft from the 9th to the 354th, but I'll see what I can find. I appreciate the answer.

RE: the panel, I have worked on lots of my own panels to customize them to do what I want and am reasonably proficient in that. Moving around GPS Aux panels, placing icons where I want them, changing types of throttle screens, working with Vpanels, etc, etc. Have never had a problem with 'access denied' and was surprised to find that I could not do so here. Will take another look.

No, have not substituted new/different/other aircraft models (at least not yet) in any of the Missions section. And, yes, I have unchecked the Auto Fuel Management settings - it is always unchecked.

DD73: Ah well, I'm an old dog...using Win XP.

My apologies for confusions. Will reorganize and review, then get back. I hope you understand that I do appreciate the work that went into this/these campaigns and presume the problems are mine, not yours. Again, thanks for the replies.

Ok, some apologies are in order. Especially to Kurt. This is what happens when you have two versions of a program loaded onto two different machines at two different houses and you have neither before you when you comment on them. There is no problem with the 354th program...the problem is with me. And there is no problem with the 49th program (that's where the Biak missions came from). Just my fault all around.

So, mea culpa, in today's parlance...my bad.

A mind is a terrible thing to live with as it ages, guys. (Age 77).

No apologies necessary. I'm just glad it's all working for you and you are enjoying the campaigns. :salute:
