4 or 6 GB of Video Memory?

I'm running some old Geforce GTX 580s and a GTX 430 ( peripherals/non P3D screens ). So I'm a bit low on video RAM. I was considering replacing the 2 580s with 1 better dual head card and swapping out one of the 580s for the 430.

I have seen several good cards for under $400. My question is that I see many post here that they use GTX 900 series (i.e. 970 or 980), and to a lesser extent the GTX 1000 series (like the 1060). All come with 6GB VRAM, and the GTX 1060 seems to be the contender for price and performance. The high end Titan cards I rarely see, nor do I have that kind of money to blow.

Hi Jim.
I came from a X58 platform...i7 990x and a GTX 970 GPU. Honestly with an i7 950, depending on your cpu overclock and cpu cooling...you are on the right track with a GTX 1060.
With my GTX 1080 I've rarely hit 4GB VRAM with everthing MAXED. A 1060 might future proof a Mother Board and CPU/RAM upgrade.
Safe skies!

A 1000 series will be more future proof. You could pick up a 900 series card at a good price right now due to the release of the 1000 series. A GTX980ti will give you 6GB of RAM compared to 4GB for a standard GTX980. I recently bought a GTX980, my first Nvidia card since installing FSX back in 2009, and I got that for around half it's original price. Unfortunately it was an impatient buy due to a faulty ATI/AMD card, but I am happy enough with it. Only regret is probably the 4GB of VRAM, which seems low compared to more recent cards. Still, I am pretty happy with the performance.

Cheers,
