An interesting article. But really the most interesting cases are the ones the public doesn´t know anything (or a little) about. Such as the case in ´62 when a Russian submarine captain almost launched a strike, but luckily he hesitated long enough to get into radio contact with HQ for an order not to fire. At least that´s the version of the story I´ve heard.
Link to article.

This is just crazy, no matter how much it has been justified by MAD.

This is an eye opening presentation. I've seen it before somewhere. Aside from the abomination of actually setting these things off, what strikes me is the arrogance of France and UK in setting them off in other peoples countries. At least the rest kept them within their own borders.

Ahh those were the days...

One that does not get a mention is arguably the closest anyone got to blowing up the planet: Thule Airbase in Greenland, 1968.
A B-52 went down onto sea ice with 4 Hydrogen bombs on board, burned a hole in the ice and permanently misplaced one of the nukes.
While so doing it released an enormous quantity of radioactive material, despite no nuclear detonation taking place.
Danish workers are still trying to get compensation for cancers developed during the biggest nuclear clean-up ever. The reindeer still glow at night...
Point is, if the plane had crashed onto the nearby Early-warning base, all the signs of a nuclear attack would've been there, and the Red button would have been pressed.

All because someone placed a foam cushion on a heating duct in the B-52, which overheated and started an onboard fire.

Think I'll go dig out my old copy of Dr. Strangelove...

I remember when we lived in Colorado when I was in grade school, we'd get tremors similar to an earthquake when they were doing the underground testing in Nevada and Utah.

It proves how nuts we ALL are. And it's a wonder we're ALL still here because of the paranoia we have against each other.

Try finding a suitable location for a nuclear test in France and the UK...

Ending the world the nuclear way kind of has a morbid fascination to it. Getting away far enough to see it all and count mushroom clouds...

The Marshall Islands were part of the US when the test were conducted - captured territory in WWII. They got independence in 1979(?) The French tests in Chad were similar, for at least the first several. When they moved to French Polynesia, it was in their territory as well. As were the UK tests in Australia...

I just happen to see this a few years ago. There was nothing else on and I wouldn't normally watch this show but this really made me laugh. Whistling past the graveyard or should I say Armagedon in a since.
