64-bit Win7 and HDR/bloom plug-in

That's some fancy vid-making, John. One question, though: I've tried that HDR plugin in multiple instances of FSX on several rigs and with three or four video cards, and I can't seem to get it working worth a hoot. Clearly I'm missing something. I'll have to pick your brain about what I might be doing wrong.

I'm picking this up from another thread: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showpost.php?p=305762&postcount=18.

This spring, we discussed a free Russian plug-in that produced a bloom-like effect, but with minimal effect on framerates: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=14917. I tried it a couple times, but gave it up: I liked the effect, but after awhile I always lost my antialiasing.

A few weeks ago, I installed the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Since then, FSX has been smoother. A few days ago, I also reinstalled the HDR plug-in. So far, it's working and I haven't lost my antialiasing. This makes me think it was a memory problem.

No promises here: I don't work for Microsoft, and I'm not paid to support their software. YMMV. Still, if you were going to install a new OS anyway, and you were on the fence about 64-bit versus 32-bit, think of this as another data point.

I just tried it again, and I'm still having problems. Is it possible that the plugin only works in windowed mode? I'm having success using it that way, but when I switch to full-screen and activate the plugin (shift-F12), I get no visual effect other than a couple of floating black polygons. This is the same thing that's happened since I started trying to use this mod, so I'm thinking it must be a problem between my chair and keyboard. ;)

Speaking of Win 7, I upgraded and installed FSX as normal...however, not once, ever have I been able to get 30FPS locked at Friday Harbour with FSX RTM, we're talking out of the box FSX, no perf enhancements, no Service Packs... I have to say I'm impressed with Win 7 so far.. ;) Oh and I'm using the bloom mod with no issues so far either.

SUCCESS! Thanks to John Venema for finally tipping me off to what my problem was. The HDR plugin doesn't work in full-screen mode with multiple monitors. That's why for years I've been trying it with different systems, and always getting a fail. I temporarily disabled my secondary monitor, and voila! HDR a-go-go. Just thought you other display-gifted chaps and chapettes would appreciate knowing that.

I never lose AA with the HDR plugin active, even when switching views.

For those interested, here's my .ini file which I tweaked about a year ago and I've been using ever since in all my videos and for testing etc. It will create a richer color pallette and works a LOT better at dawn/dusk/night, where the default .ini really fails.

John,
Using your config .... waaaaaay much better than mine. :medals:

Thank you!
