75 Years ago Today, the Flying Dutchman

Long-Time Enthusiast
As a tagline to the newly release Fokker D.21 for FSX, I wrote a review and short bio on the aircraft.

You may find it HERE.

I present this review, in Tribute to Anthony Fokker, the "Flying Dutchman", and founder of Fokker Aircraft. Mr. Fokker passed away, in New York, Dec. 23rd of 1939. Though he didn't personally design the D.21, it is with honor that I remember his work today.

First of all..thank you for starting this thread :)

He was born in Blitar, East Java- Indonesia (Dutch East Indies) and his father was a sugar plantation businessman before Fokker went to Holland at the age of 4 and built his career onward. He suffered sinusitis complication which likely causing his decease. He was still 49 years old.

Although people remember Fokker because of his aircraft I think on of his most important invention was the device to synchronise machine guns with the propeller.

Cheers,
Huub

Huub,

Although I agree with you on the importance of the machine gun synchro device, I don't think we should belittle his other achievements:

- The DR.1 so loved by Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen
- The Eindecker, first monoplane fighter aircraft in the world
- The DR.VII, best fighter in WWI and serving with lots of airforces long after WWI (including yours and mine!)

I'm sure that, should Mr. Fokker have lived longer, we would have seen more innovative designs from him and his company!

Johan
