A Dental Tale of Woe...

<!--StartFragment -->Talk about God taking care of His children, I had someone buy my little sound module just the other day, and the check arrived in today's mail.

Two evenings ago, I noticed some pain in my lower right jaw, and discovered that my lower right canine seemed a bit tender. Last evening, my lower right jaw began to swell up like a balloon and hurt like the devil!

I called my old dentist and managed to get a noon appointment. I hadn't seen him in about a dozen years, as there was no need, and with no insurance I don't make a habit of dropping in to say "hi..."

When the dentist assured me he could "save the tooth" with a root canal, and crown, and then had his office manager come up with an "estimate" of nearly $2500, I just laughed in their faces, and said, "That's nearly half of my last year's income! Just yank the tooth..."

Even so, his bill was $347. I have to go pick up my prescriptions for vicodin and antibiotic yet, but I'll bet that's going to be ~$40 or so...

Sigh... I just can't seem to get ahead, but at least now I'm not in pain... I am however feeling just a bit :jump: what with the vicodin and all... :ernae:
 
I am sorry to hear about that. I would have to agree about dental prices being rediculous.. I am in the military and have the option of getting dental work done for "free." Usually by someone in training... I stay away from there until I absolutely have to go. I had a cavity filled about 2 years ago, and a year later it fell out. I have really over the years have gone on started taking better and better care of my teeth. Just wish I would of listened to my parents years ago. I agree about the vicodin being some good stuff though. They prescribe that to us as well, and it works way better than the usual Ibprufen/Motrin that they usually give for pain. I hope you feel better, and hopefully you don't have to go back anytime in the near future. I can't think of anyone that actually enjoys going to the dentist/doctor. Just cant' believe they quoted you $2500 to fix it, and then still $400 to pull it. That is rediculous. It wouldn't of even taken an hour to fix it, and less than 10 minutes to pull it. I think we got into the wrong career field. :icon_lol:

Went through virtually the same thing 8 years ago & had come to the same decision: pull that baby! That was before I'd received my VA pension, my income at the time being less than $180/ month from service connected 20%. In fact, my income was so low that public housing in Scottsbluff actually paid me $3/month to live there! Within months my pension finally came through on first pass after waiting in the queue for 19 months. Have grown to rather like that lil' gap in my lower teeth. Have fun with the meds, Bill. Sounds like no pain there. :)

once upon a time, when i was younger and stupider than i am now, (i know, hard to imagine but it's true)
i was broke and in pain. i decided i would pull the tooth myself. i figured, hell, the way it hurts, how much worse could it possibly get? well, lemme tell ya. i found levels of pain i had previously never imagined.
first off, i pulled the wrong one. then when i grabbed the right one, it shattered.
you can be sure that was one lesson i will never EVER have to repeat

brrrrrrrrrr... The movie "Oldboy" comes to mind (you'd have to see it to know the part I'm talking about). I'm not a squeamish person, but teeth are my weakness for some reason.:barf:

I believe it.....some people could handle the pain.

My wisdom teeth except for one came in the old fashioned way... they crumbled....so over the course of 8 or so years there were periods of pain and infection. Oddly enough my molars are fine... the teeth coming in just crumbled.

Sometimes bathing said absess in Jack Daniels helped numb the pain. :jump:


Yep I did not have health insurance back then. Could not afford it because I took care of my parents needs first.

So those who argue with me like I am some kind of fat cat because I don't agree with new healthcare.... suck it up Nancy boy!:icon_lol:

That was a good one. Now all the fuzz on the back of my neck is standing straight up.. I think my hair uncurled as well.. lol..

Sorry Bill Leaming and you too CF for your pain and agony. Horrible. Tooth pain is a weakness of mine also. I normally can handle ALOT of pain. I once had a tooth ache, which in one day turned into the worst pain I have ever had. I started getting tunnel vision and was losing my thinking, near about to pass out, waiting in the emergency room, filled with wine, hoping that would have taken the pain away a bit, (nope).

As it turned out, some rotting food was jammed tightly between two teeth, next to the gums. Believe it or not, that did it. I now have a box (always filled) with this little green plastic pic things, and clean out that crevice perhaps 10 times a day, lolol...

I will never forget that pain....



On a side note. Did you know what usually killed adult men in the wild west and in colonial days in Early America?? Rotting teeth..

I spent right at $8000 at the dentist last year fixing many years of neglect.people say "why don't you just get dentures?".I have a partial plate for 2 front teeth lost in an accident and can't stand to wear it.

No thanks on dentures,I will get it all fixed.Hell,only $17,000 or so to go.:d

To tell you the truth....$7000 of the $17,000 would be for a bridge for new front teeth and I have been missing them for 10 years now.I don't think I care enough to spend that to fix it.

I know I'm goofy looking and 2 front teeth ain't gonna fix that.:d
 
The latest procedure now is to install "posts" in the jaw and then use those "posts" to secure real-fake teeth! It's an extremely costly procedure, but it most certainly is a better alternative to "false teeth" (aka: dentures)... :bump:

I have looked into that and my dentist said the only problem is they have to clean around the actual post every 3 months in office,otherwise you take a chance of infection if it's dirty and bacteria travel down the post into the jawbone.I'm not explaining it well but you get the idea.

To replace 2 teeth with a bridge,they anchor to the 2 on each side of the gap for a total of 6 teeth @$1000 each

Sounds like a good time to me.:d
