A few reasons why you should build your computer.

I've been OC-ing my systems for years without issue...current sim pc is running a qx9770 @ 4.2ghz for over 2 years without skipping a beat. I am not a real fan of liquid cooling, however, although it's been a couple of years since I've tried and I'm sure the cooling units available today are much more reliable and perform better.
Ted..do you guys at Techcorp use off the shelf liquid cooling systems (like the Corsair H50) or are they self assembled kits?

A friend of mine helped/showed me how to build a rig a few years ago, and I'm currently putting together my dream sheet of components for the next build.

We use Zalman Resorator 2 kits and I also use it at home because of my extreme OC on my Q9550 and Gigabyte X48. By the way if you are not using Extreme overclocks the Corsair H50 system is excellent and had no leaks under extreme testing. Excellent CPU cooler

Thanks for the info,Ted. I'll definitely consider the Zalman kit for my next system. I'd previous systems running with Coolit TEC liquid cooling kits but performance was poor and I wound up removing them and going with better performing Tuniq Tower air cooling for subsequent builds.:)

I've got a QX9650. As far as FSX runs, is there really a huge difference between the top end yorkfield chipsets and the i7 Nehalem line? Specifically, the i7 980x?

I did mine a little bit different on the water cooling part. I had that Zalman tower but I didn't really care for the pump style or the amount of water it held. I took a four inch PVC, cut it to a four foot length, took a toilet bowl flange for the bottom mount and a plain cap for the top. Then took a small pond pump and connected it to my tower. I also tied in a auto drain for draining it for the water change out. I ordered special high end tubing and stainless steel clamps. Great water flow, very quite. I went through a couple of blocks till I found one I really liked. No leakage so far. I got tired of all the fans running in my pooter. I now have a intake and an exhaust fan running at very slaw speed. Can ya hear me now.

I'm running a qx9650 in another system and it runs FSX just fine....certainly not enough of a benefit vs cost to move to the newer i7 980x. Is your cpu overclocked? You should be able to get a reliable 4ghz on that chip.

Yeah, it's OC'd at 3.8 and runs very stable. I've had it up to 4.2, and I did run it at 4.0 for awhile, but FSX was locking up alot.

Mike using Resorator v1 you need to do something like that to get to max cooling. they made significant changes to v2. That is a heck of good idea ya got there!

Bone the 980X combined with the Nvidia 470/480 handles FSX extremely well without tweaks of any kind, but like KD said if your FSX is smooth and trouble-free the cost might outweigh the benefit unless you just have it to spend. If I had the money I would have the 980X and the Nvidia 470 setup we had at TechCorp. Unofficial testing of FSX was absolutley impressive! However I cannot complain about how my Q9550 on this Gigabyte board OC'd handles FSX-no complaints!

Thanks, Ted. I wouldn't say my rig with FSX is trouble free. The old Geforce 780i MOBO has been a PITA the whole time I've had it. Along with my ideas of building a new rig, I have a cheaper "plan B"...which would consist of replacing the MOBO, getting DDR3 memory, and retiring the 8800GTX vid card. But, you know how it goes when you start rubbing your hands together and thinking about world domination, a guy has to have a MOMBO RIG!

I sorted my cooling problems out in a way that can only be described as overkill!
We were having a new A/C system installed during renovations and after some secret negotiations my 'computer room' was set up at 18C and roughly 1Kg over pressure.
Constant temperature and no dust.
:jump:
Madame Wombat was not amused at first, but now she has her own workstation in the 'Bunker'.
Rack up enough 40C Summer days and my sanctuary suddenly becomes a nice place to be.
Can't live with 'em and can't live without 'em.

Sounds like you'll be able to survive a full bore gas attack without a hitch while enjoying your flight sim.

Should you decide to take the Intel Core i7 980X plunge you will find the ASUS Rampage III with 6GB of Corsair Dominator RAM, two Western Digital Black 2GB HDs in RAID, and the EVGA GTX470SC, will OC to 4.5GHz without much trouble at all. Very fast and very stable. The unit we built even exceeded Digital Storm's HAILSTORM Extreme which was OC'd to 4.4 and tested by Maximum PC in the May edition.
