A Question of Time

Not having any modelling experience in the sim, and maybe scoring a 4 out of possible 10 in plastic, I wondered which would take more time:
Modelling say a 1/48th scratch-build 10/10 plane for the bookshelf, or a state-of-the-art FS9 model of same?

Interesting question as I never looked at it this way.

I think a state of the art model of a FS9 model will take more time. There are a few very productive modelmakers, but most project I have been involved in took a year from start until finish.

I am sure it depends on how adept the model designer is for FS9. Ito-San can really put them out, I sure could never keep his pace with my plastic modeling. Nor could I keep Piglet's pace. I don't care what sim I fly in, FS9, GW3, or FSX, I always wind up flying one of Piglet's planes.

I have built a complete plastic model in less than one week (6 days), but one has to stay at it with the extremes in which i build. Most models take three weeks to a month for me to complete. I do primarily 1/72, but 1/48 WW I fighters are a fave.

The Epic LT took me about a year. I mapped and remapped ever square inch of that thing, did the airfiles over and over and over, made the textures a easy to repaint system with layers, then create a group of repaints for the main package. Not to mention the soundpack.

So, a high detail 3D virtual model will probably take you much longer then creating a actual scaled 'model' of a plane, but thats for a high detail plane. There are ways to quickly whip out a mesh model, use existing gauges, sounds, basic textures, etc. Kazunori Ito is a good example of a lightning fast modellor who has developed some good shortcut techniques that work well for him.

Well Cazzie, from someone with your experience and expertise, that's a good assessment of the plastic side. Now, from the fingers of one of the FS masters...

The probable reality is: "It takes as long as it takes." Or, as the sign where I used to work said: "Good work takes time - perfection takes a bit longer"

Speaking as a Plastic Modeller and a Flight Simmer...

I don't do much scratchbuilding but, taking my time, for $50-150(CAN) I can slap an acceptable 1/48 plastic model together in 1-4 weeks...only to sit on a shelf collecting dust because they really don't fly well and generally, I can only crash them once.

FS9 models on the other hand, may take many months of spare time to design and build...but they cost less, fly better and I haven't smashed one beyond repair yet!
