A scary afternoon today

SOH-CM-2016
My images on the computer screen started to flicker on and off. Happened more and more as day went on until the blue screen came up saying something about NV4_disp in error. Rebooted in safe mode, and searched the internet, and found this is a common problem with my Nvidia 5200 graphics card. Ive had this computer since 2004 and still have the original drivers, never had a problem before, I'm thinking the computer has finaly died. Good thing I have everything backed up. Uninstalled the drivers and installed the latest for my little card and rebooted, everything is back to normal. Hard to believe the old drivers, dated 2003, caused this problem today.

Over time, information stored on a hard drive can become corrupted. Considering the age of this hard drive, it might be in the initial stages of failure. Keep a close eye out for any other little hiccups.

Yes she is getting old. Getting everything back to normal, except GW3, trying to get the display like it was, with this new nvidia control panel.

If you are lucky it is just the old GPU finally packing it in....if not it is likely the Motherboard.
One thing you can try is opening the case and do some good cleaning with a few cans of "computer duster"

Over time dust collects inside of the case and eventually settles on all the wrong places. That prevents the heat-sinks from doing their job properly and can cause the GPU to hang up.

Best of luck
Stefan

Hi,

I assume all your hardwares are correct as all is good with the new driver.
I also assume it was simply a file of your original driver who was corrupted for some reason.
If you have yet your original driver .. (and you was happy with) you can uninstall properly the new and use again your old.
Be sure to make a nice uninstall (use the freeware driver cleaner)

I've got the FX 5200 card in this '02 model computer that doubles as my flight sim rig. I've had the best performance with the 61.76 drivers for this old card. So far, the 5200 has been rock solid for me.

Glad you got it sorted out.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Not sure what the original drivers where. I installed the recommended one from nvidia. Forceware 175.19. Drivers 6.14.11.7519. With this I get crystal clear scenery in GW3, but screen resolution is wrong. Like it is stretched out to the right off screen. But when I take a screen shot, the picture looks normal? Also some 5 to 10 second freeze ups when changing views. Most wrong is Bill Lyons water textures that seem to cycle in and out of focus.
I tried the 61.76 drivers and found the screen resolution is correct, but still has the freeze ups and water problems.

After some testing, I think the video card has bit the dust. I found the original drivers thru Dell, installed and have the same problem, screen flickers and goes blank. Further testing with the 61.76 drivers, in my GW3, has my computer rebooting when I change screens. Tried some older drivers with no luck. Looks like Iam stuck with this 61.41 driver, and will continue to adjust the settings for GW3, till I find something that works. Might be time for a new computer.
