SOH-CM-2023
...a new CFS2 install.

So, I decided to start fresh since most of my previous install was made of fairly old components. I've been reading through the install guides for the PTO (start with the home front, so to speak), and had a couple of questions.

1) I've seen posts saying to create a pre-Rhumba and post-Rhumba mesh install for the PTO. I've also seen posts saying to install just the mesh, but not the watermasks. So if I, for example, wanted to fly the stock campaigns or a campaign created in 2006, would I not install any form of the mesh/masks, or would the mesh alone be acceptable?

2) The PTO install guide has the mesh components going into and replacing assorted files in the CFS2 directory. I'd previously been using a worldwide mesh I'd downloaded for FS9, so I know I can set the mesh in a central folder that each install can read from. I'm assuming I'd just be setting the Rhumba mesh in the library to something like:

-watermasks
-lod 8 mesh
-lod 7 mesh
-lod 5 mesh
-rest of default scenery in library

at least for the ETO/MTO installs that will be coming in the future.

I haven't downloaded the mesh yet - figured I'd save my download allowances in case the mesh could wait. Speaking of which, when does the allowance counter reset?

Thanks in advance, everyone.

....I for one have my KTO set up with the external Meshes as you are showing. This makes them available to all the theaters with minimum problems. However I have learned that the inclusion of the watermasks into the KTO really makes for some out-of-this-world scenery! Therefore I don't use it, just the mesh. These are used mainly with the new bases and the late Talons missions. If I want to use the stock stuff I use J. Haut meshes for the north and south KTO. This I have in the Scenerydb.

Thanks the advice, guys. :wavey:

Rami,
That's the PTO guide I'd been reading through. It does mention the issues with stock airfields vs the Rhumba mesh, but I wasn't sure how much of the conflict was the mesh vs the masks. This post here reads to me like using the mesh files is fine, but the watermasks is what's throwing the airfields out of whack, whereas other posts like this one sound like using the mesh at all will cause problems with older/stock fields.

There's also mention of Gavinc working to reposition stock airfields to fit with Rhumba's mesh. I'm kind of tempted to try and learn how to do some of that myself, depending on what exactly is involved. Any tutorials or guides towards that sort of thing I could peruse?

Fibber,
Thanks for the confirmation on the scenery setup.

SabreAce,

Gavinc DID finish retrofitting the stock airfields. However, it's all of the add-on airfields that would need to be overhauled.

"These are replacement runways for the default runways supplied by Microsoft as part of the base Combat Flight Simulator 2 package. They have been modified to be compatible with the LOD 8 mesh and Pacific Watermasks released by Rhumbaflappy (Richard Ludowise). I have been unable to fix 2 bases (Ocean Island and Emidj) and so they have been removed until I can get them fixed.

Approximately 1/3 of the default CFS2 airfields and infrastructure moved to match Rhumbaflappys new coastline. The airfields are Alexishafen, Aslito, Babelthuap, Buka, Buna, Cape Gloucester, Gasmata, Guam, Henderson, Kahili, Kavieng, Kieta, Koror, Malaguna, Mille, Munda, Namatanai, Ponape, Port Moresby, Rapopo, Salamaua, Tinian, Tsili Tsili, Vila, Wewak & Yap. All the other default airfields are untouched.

Please note that they are as similar to the default bases as I could make them, this means that they are no more historically accurate (and probably less) than the original Microsoft bases."
