A thought about Geography....

It occured to me recently that one of the reasons why the landscape looks kinda weird in FS9 when one is flying around the mountains is that the texures used on the cliffs and slopes in rocky, barren places have the striations mostly running vertical as opposed to horizontal which is what we see in real life; the layers upon layers of eartrh.

Would it be possible to somehow get thos textures to display 90 dergrees one way or another so that the striations look right? HUH? HUH?

I'll post a screenies in awhile for further explantion....!
Done...note how the lines are vertical on the cliffs....if the display of these kind of textures could somehow be rotated 90Degrees, methinks it would really add to the realism.

There is a pack of replacement cliff textures over on Simviation, by Ben Hartnett. Light Grey, Orange, Brown, Dark Grey. These cliff textures ROCK! and really make cliffs and canyons look much much better. Two of the color options are direct replacements...the other two options can not be installed at the same time (Dark Grey and Brown I think) as they have the same file name....I use the Brown ones as they really look nice in the sim.

To really get the most out of the orange cliffs, which are used for the Grand Canyon, head on over to Simviation and dig up a Grand Canyon mesh by Tom Finley (gcned30m.zip). The Grand Canyon, with the new cliffs and the new mesh, is a real delight to fly through.....Superb....make sure you have the texture thingie in your FS9.cfg cranked up to 20 to get the most out of the mesh (having it set to 21 on my system results in mesh oddities).

Just my 2 cents, FS9 stretches the textures on cliffs (top to bottom). The result is vertical striations instead of horizontal. I think you should get the best textures you like and live with the anomaly. Some are worse than others.
