:ernae: Holiday Cheer is one of the great gifts. Here in the high mountains of Colorado we have snow all over the place as usual, what is unusual here is the cold, rarely gets above 20 degrees F, and the lakes and even many of the streams are frozen deep, the skiing is great up at Wolf Creek, but i think the wolves are staying indoors for now

Great to hear all the details from you all, my family in Austria is celebrating with the usual things...Weihnachtsbaeckerei (christmas coookies with a very long name), Sachertorte, Saint Nicholas, the giver of gifts, makes his rounds arrayed in a glittering robe and accompanied by his devilish assistant, Knecht Rupnecht, children are taught that their presents have been brought by the "Kristkindl," a golden-haired baby with wings, who symbolizes the new born Christ. The story tells how the Christ child comes down from heaven on Christmas Eve and, with his band of angels, decorates and distributes trees. In the country, Farmers chalk the initials of the Three Wise Men on the archway of the stable door; C for Caspar, M for Melchoir, and B for Balthazar, to protect the animals from sickness in the coming year. Christmas trees are lit on this day and in many villages costumed wayfarers plod through deep snow from farm to farm re-enacting the plight of Mary and Joseph as they sought shelter on the eve of Christ's birth.
Most Austrian churches hold a Midnight Mass and in olden times, peasants would come down from their mountain homes in a torch lit procession. In the Tyrol region of Austria Children would set out a pan of milk for the Christ Child and his mother. A common Christmas tradition in Austria is Turmblasen, when brass instruments are played at in a church steeple or other tower, so the music can carry to all the people of the village. Another common holiday custom in Austria is “Showing the Christ Child,” where a manger is carried from house to house by people singing Christmas Carols
After Christmas Eve dinner, the Christmas Tree is unveiled. Father opens the Bible and reads of the "Kristkindl," Christ Child. Then all sing traditional Christmas carols such as "Silent Night" and "O'Tannenbaum." After this the presents are distributed and opened
Froliche Weinhnachten! (Merry Christmas)
