There I was, about 1/3 of the way through my longest flight to date....KMFD (Mansfield Lahm Regional, home of the 179th Air Lift Wing..my home airport) to Whiteman AFB in Missouri. Had the Alpha C130 decked out in a decent 179th skin, cruising along at 4000 feet, at dawn, over snowy ground, through snowy and very cloudy skies. Had the Autopilot kicked on so I could pull double duty....had to give my 30 gallon fish tank its weekly massive water change and cleaning. Keeping an eye and ear on ATC chatter in case I had some instructions to change course or altitude.

Flight started at 24.8 FPS. As I hit heavier clouds, frame rates dropped to 17 to 20 range. As the flight went on, frame rates kept dropping and dropping....until they were down to 4 FPS. At this point, my auto pilot stopped working and my keyboard stopped responding. Had to do a hard boot to get out of the sim. I suppose tomorrow I will have to pull the system out and give it a cleaning.....darn cat litter dust gets into everything and in a hurry.

Man, the skies were so pretty! And I was looking forward to completing my first 2 hour flight.

My tale's worse Tim.

FS9 did the second CTD on everything I tried to fly yesterday for the second time since I got the computer fixed in July. Guess it dump the lot and restart. I sure wish I could figure out what is causing this mess.

I'm thinking I may be greedy and trying to stuff too much in FS9, aircraft and scenery. Maybe I'll go a little lighter on the re-install.

Makes one angry, but with all the health issues here at SOH and among my own family, Uninstalling and reinstalling FS9 is a most minor grievance.

Don't know how your fps gets so low, when FS9 works, I get a constant 30 fps 9with the setting at 30 fps) everywhere. Even in NYC, they never drop further than 26. That's why I still love the sim so well with all the add-ons.

After I did my post and logged off, I ran CCleaner...and there was 430 MEG of crap to be cleaned. I run CCleaner each and every time I leave the net....but my wife had been on the system looking at whatever it is she looks at....dishes, puppies, and Christmas decorations mostly...right before I fired up my flight. I wonder if having all that crap laying around on my system could have resulted in the frame rate drop...or at least added to the problem.

And I found that the windows searchindexer was running on my system AGAIN. In one of the Windows XP updates, one of the included updates was Windows Search Indexer V4.0.....it wants to run all the time...and I have been trying to get rid of it ever since I unknowingly installed it via the updates. That is 4 processes that I simply do not want running EVER.

Today I will give my system a good cleaning to make sure all my fans and heat sincs are clean and dust free...then I will retry the flight and see how my frame rates do.

Tim,

Try running Game Booster from IObit.com before you fly. It's free and does a fairly safe and good job of shutting down unnecessary stuff running in the background.

One thing that constantly comes out of the RTWR training is the need to do a fresh reboot of the computer before a long flight - esp. after you ( or SWMBO) has been running the comp and jumping around programs for a while. A few are still memory-hogs so they need to be flushed before they drag FS to the gutter.
When I do a lot of panel work (with resulting online searches and in-out jumps to FS) I find the sim can suffer... in this case it's not necessarily FSPS but just the multiple windows and bits that hang around.

Man.. I feel your pain OBIO and Cazz,

Years ago when I was in a virtual airlines, doing cross atlantic flights in the tripple seven and four seven, I had close calls with not making it accross after a couple of hours. So I started saving during the trips. Now and then, I would just hit Control/Save and give it a generic save name that I used all the time. If I crashed (CTD) I could then go right back into the sim and continue from where I was with only a couple of min's lost in the journey.

On clouds, even mine does that with too much clouds, (high realism settings and awesome cloud textures, real weather). The problem is the clouds use semi-transparencies and they are stacked, so the computer is having to show certain sets behind other sets, etc, etc... According to FengZ, it takes a huge hit on the computers resources.

But... Make sure your anti-virus scan isnt starting up during a flight. That would do it as well...
