Little help, please?

After a Windows crash, I had to reformat my C: drive and reinstall Windows, CFS3, OFF, etc. Game worked perfectly before. Now, almost every time I fly a mission, CFS3 eventually crashes, and I am thrown back to the OFF Manager menu screen.

I have tried all sorts of different tweaks to get the game to work, but none have worked yet. Here is a list of things I have tried so far:

Lowered hardware acceleration in DxDiagnose
Changed screen resolution
Disabled sound card
Lowered memory settings
Checked for heat issues (NOT a problem)
defragged HD
scanned for spyware

I am now out of ideas. Any advice? I can go into more detail, but I thought I would keep this short in case the forum is taken down this weekend.

I havn't got any extremely technical ideas but, if all else fails do a clean wipe of both CFS3 and OFF and re-install. Maybe someone else can pinpoint your problem.

I'm hoping to avoid a reinstall, mainly because I don't want to have to reset all of my joystick and keyboard settings, now that I have them set up how I like them. Leave it to Microsloth not to allow me to save my settings to a file outside of CFS3! :banghead: :censored:

If you're running XP, I think you can just go to the equivilent directory on your machine>> C:\Documents and Settings\Parky\Application Data\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields

Find and save a copy of the "mine.xca" file....then put it back after your clean install. I believe that's where your custom keyboard/joystick settings are stored.

Haven't tested it, but it should work.

Cheers,

Parky

Hello,

quoting Cameljockey after Taffy described his problems:

"Got Vista?"

Sorry and OT, but this just sounded a bit negative, like

"Got Herpes ?" :icon_lol:...:kilroy:

I guess i will further use XP and wait for MS's next Operating system ...
Greetings,
Catfish

in vista you'll find the file at C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields

certainly worked for me in the past Parky both with XP and Vista

I was asking if he had Vista. He never stated. You could go in the other direction and compare it to "got milk?" but true to human nature, offense is automatically taken. tsk, tsk.:icon_lol:

Ah, forum back online.

I do not have Vista. It's XP for me. Sometimes it pays to be a computer Luddite. :d

Thanks, Parky. I hadn't thought of looking in My documents for that file. Will copy it and probably reinstall OFF. Everyone else, thanks for your help, too. I will report my results later.

It's not in "My Documents"... it's in C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields

Just so you don't tear your moustache off looking for it....;)

run cfs3config.exe in the CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder and setup as per the readme, and take terrain and scenery below 5 at least.

Yea!

Parky--Gotcha.

I think (fingers crossed) that I may have solved the problem. I downloaded FS Autostart (now AlacrityPC), ran it, and haven't been crashed to the OFF Manager in two missions since. So, it appears one of Windows services was causing my problems. I'll fly a few more missions tomorrow to confirm. Thanks, all!

What did your logs and alerts show in Administrative tool. You can see what caused the failure if you go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/ Computer Management/ Event Viewer. BTW, if you go into MSCONFIG/startup and uncheck everything then reboot and go back into MSCONFIG and ck just your security program that is really all you need running. The other programs will work fine XP just won't load them at start up. XP is more set up for remote operation and runs a lot of services in the back ground that you really don't need. To get better performance out of your system go here>>> http://www.blackviper.com/ he suggests a very go way of shutting down services that you don't need....Mike

Heymoe--Like that name. :costumes:

Here is the Windows error message I am getting that I think is related to OFF.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: WinMgmt
Event Category: None
Description:
A provider, OffProv11, has been registered in the WMI namespace, Root\MSAPPS11, to use the LocalSystem account. This account is privileged and the provider may cause a security violation if it does not correctly impersonate user requests.
Does this mean anything to you? I went to the link provided at the Microsoft knowledge base but could not make heads or tails of it. :isadizzy:
Thanks!

I think the culprit has something to do with my cable modem. For some reason, my TPC/IP "lease" gets rejected every 30 minutes, resulting in my internet connection disconnecting and resetting. Unless I go into Network Connections and disable my internet connection before running OFF, I get crashed to the OFF shell when the lease is rejected.

The other option is to use AlacrityPC to terminate selected Windows Services and any unnecessary programs before I run OFF. As a matter of fact, I highly recommend AlacrityPC to anyone else who is concerned that they don't have enough system resources to run OFF. If you are familiar with EndItAll, AlacrityPC is a similar program, but better IMO. If you are interested, here is the link: http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/download.htm

Moe--I did indeed go to the site you mentioned. Tried the tips but still got knocked back to OFF manager. This led me to believe the problem is with my modem, because when I manually disabled it my problem disappeared. Thanks for your help, anyway! :medals:
