Adding a spoiler or dive brake

Is there anyway to add a spoiler/dive brake to a plane if it doesn't have it? I don't need the graphics/animation...but just a functioning dive brake.
It appears to me that it must be in the M3D first.

The P-47M had dive brakes, yet not one P-47M I've found has them. My P-47M uses the P-47D-25 (stock CFS3)M3D.

I've added lines to the CFG.file and AIR.file like other planes have(P-38L for example).

My HUD shows a dive brake, and will deploy, yet nothing happens...no drag, no lift...nothing, even though I added values to them in the AIR file.

Here is a file with a P-47 with dive brakes. Make sure you delete the bdp and rename as needed. Oh, right click on the file and save link and you should be able to download it. Get rid of the .txt so it returns to a zip file and unzip!

Yup, I remember seeing the speedbrake or divebrake option in the airfile under AirWrench. You may even be able to change it simply in the config file aircraft.cfg but .air is better. Check both and see.

Well after over an hour...I've come to the conclusion that the only thing in the config file that seems to matter is: spoiler_limit = 60

All that does it make the Dive Brakes show up on the HUD.

I'm sure at this point that what I need to make it actually functional is in the AIR file.

I crosschecked both AIR files line for line, changing my AIR file lines anywhere I see them different than the one you posted. I still am unable to make it work.

I'm completely baffled now. At least I know now at least which file needs changed.

Thank you so far.:ernae:

Just use the ones I sent you. You need to change a few lines in the cfg but other than that it should be an easy switch. If you want, send me the files and I'll make you one with what you need. It will take 30 seconds.

BTW, the airfile and cfg I sent you are the stock MS ones for the p-47 25 with a spoiler added.

Did you modify that stock AIR file?

I was able to use my config file with the AIR file you sent me...it's just radically different and doesn't really fly right at all in that combo.

I'm currently using the Mudpond AIR file...but heavily modified...this will take some work to get it like my P-47M I'm currently using.

OK...can you modify my AIR File?

I opened it up and there was a vast amount of data missing. Is that what you want? I'll add the spoilers to this file and send it back.

Data missing? I wonder if I screwed it up somehow? LOL Hmmm.

Yeah I'll give it a try. Thanks again.
I'm off to work, be back in 9-10 hours!

here you are with all the data

You should be good to go. This airfile and cfg are the ones you need. Good luck

Thanks...but this wasn't excactly what I was looking for. Although it did help me to find out how to add them to a plane that doesn't in the first place...or why mine weren't working. So Thanks again.

I'll explain below in another post....Again, thank you very much for your help. It did help!

Adding Dive Brakes (to ANY plane that DOES-NOT have them already)
First Backup your files before EDITing them.

#1=EDIT Config file(Using notepad): Find the line in [airplane_geometry] that looks like this: spoiler_limit = 60
It's probably 0...make it 60.

#2=EDIT AIR File as follows(Using a program called AirEd):

Section # 1101-Primary Aerodynamics...
Add Figure to Drag for Spoiler. 220 is normal.
You can also add pitch and lift for Dive recovery flaps like a P-38L.

Section # 1539 AND #1540-UNKNOWN...
Remove these records entirely(Right click on it and select remove record).

This is the record I believe that tells the AIR file whether it has Dive Brakes or not. By doing steps 1&2 above...this record NEEDS to be removed or the brakes won't function. This was my biggest problem as all the MudPond planes I'm using have this record, yet it is un editable with AirEd.
NOTE: This record effects lift and drag and may adversly effect the plane's handling.

Thanks again for all your help, and I hope that this thread helps someone else.

D Day P-47M

Was the P-47M you were working on the one from the D Day expansion pack. I was thinking about getting a copy but wanted to know how one of my favorite warbirds turned out in this expansion.

No, I made one from modified Mudpond P-47D-25. I don't like any of the other ones I've tried. I fly my own fictional 1945-1947 campaign I made and most of my planes are, at least losely, based on the Mudpond ones.

What is this D-Day expansion pack you speak of? I've never tried it.

Glad to help friend. Just curious, what plane did you do it too? Did it affect the handling

It was dancat/preeze´s bv p-170. It had animation for the dive brakes, but in my install they showed no effect.
The ac flies well now and I think about testing invisible dive brakes with a Go 229.

I tried a less intrusive way and it worked on my P-55 really well.
Edit(as Hex) Section #1540...the last line will be all 0's.
Like= 0018 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Make it look like this= 0018 00 00 00 00 00 80 BB FF

This seems to just add drag ONLY. No lift.

Sorry, it did not work with Ho-229v5 (FP). But that doesn´t mind - so plan A had to do - now I use the extra lift for tighter turns with this power-toy. :ernae:
thanks for your effords, yours wolfger
