Adding Scenery Question

Is there a max number of entries in the Scenery.cfg file? I looked at mine earlier and have 198 in there and I'm wondering if I should thin the herd a bit.

Someone once suggested that FS only loads scenery when you get within a certain distance of it. If so, maybe it doesn't matter how many are installed.

There's 359 in my scenery cfg (wow, had no idea).

One thing I do is combine scenery from the same author. They tend to use the same textures and some of the same bgl files. Like I have all of Toni Agramont's sceneries in the same folders. Saves a lot of space.

Especially when they are from the same author and in nearby areas combining is a good idea for load times in FS as well. Because it otherwise loads the same texture a couple of times....not efficient.

Just be careful to go through the Scenery Library first and de-activate the sceneries you intend to combine. Shut down the sim, restart once, shut down again and then combine.

Failure to do that will leave FS searching for the sceneries in their old location and complain about it.

Cheers
Stefan

Hi,

I don't think there is any simple maximum number of layers, but FS2004 will check all the entries when it starts, which will increase the initial loading time. I have several hundred scenery layers and FS2004 routinely takes at least a couple of minutes to get to the initial aircraft/scenery load selection screen.

This is what one gets from having run FS2004 for many years !

Just looked at mine....

781 (!!) and still got some to add, does slow the load time, but I find its a nice surprise when I go somewhere
and find a long-forgotten scenery

I have 716 areas at the moment, Willy and no problems....I heard somewhere that it maxes pout at 1000 but I really don't know if it's true. I've added so many that a lot of times it's a surprise when I come across some of the stuff in flight cuz I've usually forgotten I put some stuff in. I havn't really noticed a major loadtime increase from scenery ...as long as it's in a separate place on the drive or on another drive. Mine is on another drive from the sim itself and what I've found is that the huge amount of planes I have increases loadtime.
