Administrator Priviliges for starting FS9

I love the way this sim just keeps throwing curves at you. Never a dull moment.

This evening, after running normally for a couple of weeks, the new iterations of FS9 I have on my G drive are now announcing the following when I go to the "Shortcuts" folder on the desktop and double-click on the .exe file for the sim:

"Please login with administrator privileges and try again."

I'm not sure what's happened. We have power bumps down here all the time, the most recent was early Monday morning, and I don't know if that's had anything to do with this. At any rate - how do we go about getting this back to just double-clicking on the shortcut and starting the sim?

Yesterday was Windows update Tuesday, so that may be what changed.

Right click on the shortcut and look at it's Properties.

Look on the Compatibility tab for a check box to "Run as Admin".

Cheers,
Lane

The box was unchecked. I checked it, applied it, and hit "OK."

Put disk 4 into the machine, double clicked on the shortcut.

I get a User Account Control box asking if I want FS9 1970S.exe to make changes to the computer. I hit "yes."

Nothing happens.

It includes an anti-piracy update that causes FS9 to fail if it requires CD 4 in the drive. Find and install the no-CD patch and all should be well.

The penalty around here for having anything to do with that was severe, something akin to boiling oil.

I'm off on my quest.

Now we are back to the old 77% point on the startup scroll, and a CTD at that point - when yesterday it was working fine.

And this with a fresh install of FS9, right off the disks. Only differences are gauges added to the gauge folder, and about 12 add-on aircraft. And, two days ago, this setup was working for hours at a time.

Hi,
That's a great idea TG...reinstall the original FS9, you have to run it I think, then install the FS9.1 update and see how/if that works; and then you can do what we're not allowed to mention if you don't want to keep the CD in the slot. If you did though, would it wear out; would it even be spinning in there once the sim is running ?

Andy.

Whether it spins or not is up to the drive and its drivers. Unless you did a "compact" install, you can remove the disc after the Sim starts.

Absolutely. I've done that myself many times.

I want to make sure I'm understanding what's been said. If I follow that link, I can find out how to uninstall the 9.1 update?

There's no need to uninstall the 9.1 update - in fact, you shouldn't. It addresses several critical issues that popped up when FS9 was originally released. The process you should follow is to install FS9 from the four CD's, then install the 9.1 update (which requires disk 4 to be inserted), then add in the 9.1 updated version of the no-CD file. After that, you can start installing your other add-ons.

Edit: If you're talking about the link that tgibson posted, that will take you to instructions on removing the Windows Update which disabled the anti-piracy feature that requires disk 4 for the Sim to start.

I'll see if disabling the anti-piracy feature will let these iterations of FS9 run normally, as they used to, without the need to invoke administrator privileges.

Lo and behold, so far I've been able to start the other iterations of FS9 after flushing this annoying update. I love this. You can learn so much about your computer in general by just getting involved in something like Flight Sim 2004. For example, how you can set your "update" preferences for your machine to tell you there is an update available, would you like to see it and install it if you think you need it - then have a system restart due to a power bump down here, and find out MS designed this OS to restore itself back to "automatically install updates" without telling you. Like they have to protect you from yourself.

At any rate, after getting rid of that KB update, everything works except the one iteration I've been working on, adding things in one at a time until I find out what the offending files are - it still hangs up at 77% (weather settings) during the start-up. So at least I'm back to where I was when this started. Thanks to everyone who helped with this, really.
