Advice for bigger AC

Hi!

I almost exclusively fly small GA and millitary birds and nothing bigger than Piglets AN-32. The other day I watched some youtube clip showing alot of aircraft starting from a big US aiport, and suddenly I really feel that I want to try a bigger aircraft in FSX. But since this is a totally new area for me I need you guys and gals to point me in the right direction. So my question to you is: I want to fly a big aircraft, freeware is important since I want to try this out before spending any money at it. Props or jets is not that important, right now it is size that matters.
So any suggestions? Thank you in advance. :jump:
 
Depends on if your in FSX or FS9 to be honest. Very few large aircraft can cross over without some form of tweaking.. If you've been flying GA aircraft, you may be more accustomed to a hands on approach as opposed to automated systems. For this, I cant think of a better freeware aircraft than David Maltbys DHC-106 Comet. It looks great, it flys fabulously, and its a hell of a lot of fun.. Not to mention it comes with all you need to fly it in fsx. Just read the download page thoroughly as there are a couple different files you need to download for it.. Simply dive into the library here, on Flightsim.com, Avsim.com, Simviation.com. Thousands and thousands of freeware packages of every type. I'm sure you'll find a large freeware bird to fly around in. I have FSX but don't use it....I'm a die hard FSNiner....and my favorite big birds to fly in FS9 are the freeware ALphasim C-130, C-141 and Shorts Belfast, Piglet's freeware C-133.

Heck, head over to Premiere Aircraft Design (PAD)'s site...they have a lot of larger birds...all freeware. They even have a very nice C-130 for FSX and FS9

There are several default tubes if you just want to try flying big iron.

The FSX lessons can be a good place to start.
 
If size matters and it must be freeware, how about the Antonov AN-225 by Thomas Ruth? It is available at both AVSIM Library and FightSim.Com; search for the file name tom225x.zip. The An-225 is larger than either the Airbus A380 or Boeing 747.

Try Thomas Ruth's An-225!
He also has a number of other freeware heavy iron aircraft available for FSX too.

If you decide to go payware, the PMDG MD-11 is by far the best heavy out there. However I would definitely start with something a bit easier. Best thing to remember when flying the heavies is that everything happens a lot faster, and maneuvers are much slower. Stay a step or two ahead of the plane at all times and you should do fine. :salute:
 
heh. I was gonna mention the 225, but thats like taking a oat driver and putting him on an aircraft carrier. ::LOL:: The comet is about the size of a 737, and flies extremely well, but yeah, that mryah is a wonderful plane... Just hard to find the version with the VC..

An-225 by Thomas Ruth in FSX has a VC as does his An-124.
 
I believe thasts the version i have.. I didnt know about the 124.. I'll have to download it.. I love those planes

The attachment is a scan from P.G.Taylor's own story "The Sky Beyond". Capt. Taylor was an aviation pioneer, specialising in navigation. He was co-pilot to Kingsford Smith on several record setting trans-Pacific and trans-Tasman flights. Having spent a lot of time in his own DH Moth floatplane, he started a new job with the original A.N.A, on the Sydney Melbourne run in the late 1920s. This was his first impression of the Avro 10.

Awesome is a word that springs to my mind when i read your answers, great suggestions and even some words from Captain Taylor. Thank you. I will go and take a look at that Comet and start from there.
 
Thomas Ruth has done a lot of Airbus aircreaft, besides the Antonovs. At Avsim you can find an A300, 310, Beluga, A330 and A340, maybe even more models. All FsX Native!
Just do a search for his name.
 
Tom also did a B727, if it has to be something with more than two engines.

FSND has a MD-83 if you like medium range hops and 1980s semi-glass cockpits.
