Got a couple questions for anyone with any of Dean Reimer's great addons.
  • Is there a good sound package for the Hornet available anywhere? and..
  • has anyone tried any tweaks to the panels, such as making the radio available from the VC or adding Eric Marchiano's radar?
Thanks, and Happy New Year. :ernae:

Speak of the devil. I just reinstalled the US and Canadian packages. I am using a sound set by
Christoffer Petersen called "f-18_ge-400_the_real_deal.zip". I probably got it off of Avsim so good luck finding it there. It may be on Flightsim.

I haven't tried to add the radar. I thought the Radio was available from the VC. I'll have to investigate.

My records show that I purchased the RAAF/US package back in 2005. For the last couple of years I had relocated it to my 'hangar'. :salute:

Recently I got the urge to fly a fast jet and decided to reload it. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Since I run FS9 on an old machine, the plane works without any framerate hits on my machine. Consequently, I picked up the Blue Angels pack at SimMarket. :jump:

Since my initial post I found a Turbine Sounds Studio F/A-18 sound set at SimMarket, so I got my first issue resolved. :applause: I'm still interested to hear from others on any tweaks they've made.

Over the past couple of days (as time permits), I've been refamilarizing myself with the aircraft. Since I fly mostly from the VC, I noticed how the radio panel was setup. The radio panel is a popup panel that masks the autopilot panel quite well in 2D, but is not available in VC (unless you use the shortcut). :isadizzy:

In researching various forums on the AF Hornet, I didn't find any threads where anybody had tweaked the panel. I would think that some clever folks could come up with a simple xml routine that would turn on/off the various gauges to allow switching between the nav/radio or the engine/add on radar gauges to make both panels more functional. That would really be a great enhancement to an already great a/c. Unfortunately I don't have the skills - just the imagination. :mixedsmi:
Thanks :ernae:

It's a start...

Let's see how this works. Got some more tweaking to do, but you can see my progress.

Here's the standard 2D panel for the single seat version ..

And here it is with a popup panel for the radar. I'm following the same concept design as with the radio panel by overlaying the main panel in the 2D view.

And here is my first intercept.. I copied the panel folder into a new folder called panel.radar, and aliased it to my NASA repaint. It is a test, you know. :icon_lol:

And the radar is fully functional. I might take advantage of the MFD buttons and add some clickable features for the radar next.

Only wish I could figure out how to switch the actual MFD gauges within the 2D and VC so the popup panels could be eliminated.

Cheers. :icon29:

Yup, Eric Marchiano's radar works great in both freeware hornets, I don't have the latest payware version so I couldn't tell you. The TSS sound package is a great addition but the spool-up sounds I couldn't live with, so I and lifted the sounds from the original v1 package back into the TSS package. The HUD Im using came from the Viperden F-16, and the ICP is fully functional, but it's still a WIP. There's little of the original 2D panel(forward view) left on my A/C, but it's better than either of the originals (IMHO). This pic is from the fs2002 hornet (my test a/c) but most of the working stuff is in my AF V1 a/c as well.

WH47: I'm not sure what you mean by elimination the pop-up panels, but my MFD 'pop-ups' overlay each other and are controlled by invisible buttons placed over the MFD's buttons on the main BMP. When you click a button on the outer edge of the MFD, the invisible button toggles on/off a pop-up panel that covers whatever is currently displayed. The buttons are in the sim_icons CAB (in the gauges folder) but you need to know how to properly assign the window idents. The base cockpit BMP has the button defs next to the buttons so when NO pop-ups are displayed, the cockpit BMP shows the button descriptions. Each popup has the same base BMP as the MFD, but a particular pop-up window def is not on the pop-up BMP for that window- so it appears like the button is depressed (no def for that window displayed). I've got 6 pop-ups for each of the 2 MFD's and am working on the center (lower) to help relieve them of the engine/nav duties.

:)

Thanks, Maddog.

I was only referring to an improved VC. With the "Team FS KBT" Super Hornet, for example, you can toggle between the various gauges [MFD] from the VC. With the AF Hornet you cannot access the radio panel unless you hotkey to the popup panel. I was just thinking out loud and wondering if anyone would attempt updating the gauges or panels for the AF Hornet to increase their functionality.

Not a big thing, anyways. I like the AF Hornet so much I just added the CF package to my setup. :mixedsmi:

Your pics are identical to the AF V1 hornet cockpit, if you look on the ICP in the 2d cockpit, below the brightness knob is a button marker 'em/con'- that toggles the panels data displays between autopilot and radio modes. It should be simple to replace your A/P displays with the radio displays in the VC but I can't imagine how you'd read them, they're very small. I don't think I can get the two sets of displays to toggle back and forth in the VC as the radio display is a different instrument, and uses it's own window.

Hmmm...

My USA/RAAF package is V1, whereas my Blue Angels and CAF packages are V2. The radar panel I made works with both versions. What are the differences between versions?
