AFG Caravelle - FSX?

delta_lima

Charter Member 2015
With all this talk about the Nimrod (which is fantastic, incidentally!), I got to thinking about my fave FS9 airliner ... the AFG Caravelle!

I've had a pile of panel sizing and starting problems with it - wondering if some of the gurus here got it going? It is a real looker on the ground ... would love to take her up!

cheers, (et merci bien, l' equipe de AFG!)

Maybe I should have explained the symptoms further ...

Pedestal/overhead panels won't close, once opened. In fact, I can't get them to operate period.

The model is so nice, I've subbed in the terrific Maltby BAC-111 panel. Anathema to the purists, I know, but unless a better solution can be found, it's a sacrifice worth making to be able to enjoy an otherwise awesome plane.

Thoughts?

I use the afg6rnhf.zip version from avsim with good results. You might also try the latest version of the 6R and panel from simviation.com/htg

delta_lima, you seem to use an older version.
I also have no problem here (only issue is the smoke, which is coming from the left wing)
If you head over to the HJG website (http://www.simviation.com/hjg/downloads.htm) and get the different parts for the Caravelle - there is a version 2 of the panel available, which is working as it should.

P.S. corrected smoke is:

[SMOKESYSTEM]
smoke.0=-37.52, -7.9, 2.29, fx_caravelle_eng
smoke.1=-37.52, 7.9, 2.29, fx_caravelle_eng

Another tweak that I found useful is to add zorder=x in the panel.cfg after each window so that the panel windows don't get blocked behind the main panel. For instance,

[Window00]
file=Upper_c6r.bmp
size_mm=1280
position=2
visible=1
ident=10020
zorder=0

and

[window01]
file=main_c6r.bmp
size_mm=1280
position=6
visible=1
ident=10000
zorder=1

etc., for each of the window entries.

For sure you want the main panel to be zorder=0 to make sure the other panels open on top of the main panel. I just used the same number sequence as the window numbers (0 thru 19) and that works fine for me.

Got the itch to go fly old jetliners lately ... still love this jet. SAS and Swissair are my favourite liveries - though they're all special in their own way.

Question regarding cockpit visibility - I recently discovered the Ctrl+Q adjustment trick for 2D panel views in FSX (I know, what rock was I living under?!!) ... but that's kind of an annoying way to do it - and furthermore, I find for some reason (maybe when I switch views a few times) that the view gets reset way too high (can't see runway).

Is there a way to "pin" the view in the 2D panel somehow so it stays the way I want it every time I load the plane?

Thanks!!

DL

PS: just discovered this lovely WIP scenery for Basel:

... any other nice Swiss airports to visit in the Caravelle? I know there's likely little done in the classic period, but am open to nicely modeled airliner-oriented airports in Switzerland ... thanks for any ideas out there

Not that I'm aware of. Though if so, I'd be keen on one. Neverheless, save for the absence of a VC, the AFG model is simply gorgeous in every respect. Regardless, I'm focused on the AFG model available today.

Again - if anyone knows about the 2D view height adjustment issue, I'd be much obliged.

cheers,

DL

You need to adjust panel.cfg like this - add or update the [VIEWS] section. Simplify it to this, adjust to your liking:

Code:
[VIEWS]
VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=3.0,0.0,0.0
VIEW_FORWARD_ZOOM=0.50

The main window ident has to be renamed like this (here the main window is number 01, not 00):

Code:
[window01]
file=main_c10r.bmp
size_mm=1280
position=6
visible=1
ident=MAIN_PANEL
zorder=1

At the very bottom of the panel.cfg check if the default view section is like this:

Code:
[Default View]
X=0
Y=0
SIZE_X=8191
SIZE_Y=3480

I guess that's it...

Nice plane indeed! Too bad there's no VC... Can't say I fly it often... Will try a Nice-Calvi flight tonight...

Approching Corsica... Smooth ride... Yes the AFG Caravelle is pretty indeed!
But why the flaps don't extend? Must have forgotted to swith on an hydraulic pump... Need to read the * manual...
I flew quite often in one of those (the real one) between Paris and Rabat as a kid...

Thanks V!

I'll try that trick tomorrow.

Yes, a moderately advanced set of systems - but totally manageable. I find 2D panels easier for airliners, so I don't begrudge the absence of a VC - though it would certainly be a treat with one. It would be almost a waste to model a whole new plane - with all the HJG and other liveries, a "mere" VC and panel mod to integrate into the existing exterior model would seem to me the ideal path. Of course, the VC and it's systems is likely more work than the plane itself ... but I say that only to affirm how lovely the existing model is. Alas, AFG no longer exists, so I have a hard time believing that will materialise.

Anyway, I'm happy as a clam with what's here so far - thanks for the tip.

cheers,

DL

Thanks VS - that did the trick. Though I reversed the zorder entry - otherwise the other smaller panels get hidden by the main panel when you call them up.

Just a question. I want to get rid of the "embedded" sounds - v callouts, and ongoing jet sound - even when shut down. So I thought - easy, replace the sound folder with another jet's, right? Well, I tried another sound folder - and the callouts and other sounds are still there. I hunted around for "gauge sound" files, and there doesn't appear to be any ....

How does one get rid of these? I'd like to look for a RR Avon engine set and be done with the rest of the stuff.

thanks,

DL
