I am just beginning to add AI packages to my main install. At this point, I have maybe 10 packages from MAIW and WOAI installed.....and what a difference those packages have made to my virtual skies and airports. I am now on a mission to populate my skies and airports with as much AI as I can cram in....both military and civilian (GA and Commercial). But first, I need to clean up the mess that is my Flight Sim HD. I have 4 installs (Main...which contains the planes that I fly most often, GA...General Aviation planes, Mod...modern Military, and VinMil...Vintage Military) and tons of odds and ends that I have downloaded and have never used or simply can't tell if I want it or not since the whole mess is just to darn confusing to sort through.

Over the next week or so, I am taking a break from flying, tweaking, installing.....and I will back up all of my installs and important files on my system...then I will be formatting the 3 main drives (C....250gig Sata, D....1TB Sata and E....500gig Sata) and doing a complete reinstall of the OS, of all my programs, and will install just 1 install of FS9. That install of FS9 will be populated with just those planes that I actually fly on a fairly regular basis. And that install will get tweaked and enhanced with all the improved ground scenery, clouds, sky, water, grass, mesh and AI packages that I can cram into it.

And after I get my system and sim back up and running, I will be taking a break from tweaking and painting. Probably a lengthy break. I just don't have the drive to tweak and paint and enhance planes at this point. I guess I am burnt out with working on planes. I just want to fly and enjoy my sim time in the air instead of in Photoshop and ACM and MDLmat. Those planes that I fly on a regular basis are already tweaked to my liking....all I do is keep myself from enjoying my sim by working on planes that do need improved but are not planes that I will actually spend any real air time in. To keep me from spending time working on planes instead of flying them, the only sim utility that I will be installing after the system rebuild will be ACM.....no Photoshop, no MDLmat, no Air Wrench, no AirED, no hex editor.

During this tear down and rebuild, I will still be on the site via my wife's system and the trusty old laptop.

Good show!
Going back to pure flightsimming after "working" on it is an amazing experience...
But I'm sure you'll want to keep a "vanilla" sim, with no AI, handy.

AI is a pig which bloats and bloats, not only planes but scenery too.
My main sim is now taking nearly 10 minutes to load.
Way too much if you're just wanting a quick fly...

Tim,

good luck with the sabbatical. Sometimes we need it. I know how you feel, currently building from scratch after Norton Utilities chewed up my registry, then spat it out!!

I have and you have, I'm sure, taken these breaks from tweaking with the best of intentions, only to find that as we re-install we find things that need tweaking, thus the circle begins again. It's an calling, or an affliction, something in our inner psyche that wont let it go un-fixed, you'll be back and you know it, lol.

PS. If you still need El Dooderino, let me know, I'll chuck him your way, Poopy suicide, or somethin', no?

I got The Dude from my Greek Connection....but thanks for the offer.....and yes, I will most likely be back to tweaking the first time I find a gauge or effect out of place....it's a mental disorder I do believe.

I only fly about 5 aircraft at any given period. What I do is remove all the other airplanes to a folder outside of FS9 that I brilliantly named "Non-Used AC."
When I tire of those, I simply move them out of the hanger and replace them with whatever I currently want to fly.

I keep my AI traffic segregated in a smiliar fashion. That way it doesn't take very long for my sim to get up and running. I do something similar with my radio controlled flying. I don't have one of those big trailers so I can only carry at most two airplanes to the field at a time. So I just fly the same two airplanes for a few weeks and them swap for a couple more.

It works for my simple mind.

No, it's not a mental disorder. It's FUN, just as much fun as flying. One has only to find the right balance between the two and you will be happy. :salute:

Good on you, Tim. Have a nice break and we'll see you soon. By the way, It is my firm belief that all of this is either a mental disoder, as you said, or perhaps some kind of pan-galactic plot. But we'll never know for sure, will we?

Tim,
Now is your chance to learn to fly helicopters (if you don't know how). That will keep you busy (and maybe stressed out?) for a month. Or two. Or three? (hehe).

It is a shame that the AI cannot be in a separate folder aka FSX, the Aircraft folder gets very big very quick

Thank you Tim for all the great gifts you've given us. Please, please have fun, just chill and enjoy your family and life, those are the important things:jump:

Be advised there there is apparently such a thing as too much AI. You'll know you're reached that point when you turn in the direction of some busy airport and suddenly FS freezes up solid and you have to shut it down with Task Manager to regain the use of your confuter.

Always good to take a break Tim. Done it several times. Just start when you want it again or not. Been there too.

Too much AI...never. ;)
Depends on your experience, I guess. I'm getting awful tired of the Southwest and Delta flights MyTraffic06 puts at KPVU - the biggest commercial flight that operates from there is a CRJ with Frontier (Once or twice a week)!
I'd use another AI package, but nothing else puts F-16s at KHIF without murdering my FPS quite messily (and that includes MAIW - I'm using their scenery, but their traffic simply had to go).

Luckily, I have a system that will allow me to run as much AI as I can cram into my sim. And if I find that it ever begins to bog down, I can always double my RAM for $50 (from 6gig of DDR3 1333 to 12gig of DDR3 1333) or over clock my CPU or over clock my video card...or all three...or add a second and/or third video card.
