AI aircrafts

What is the usage of the AI aircrafts ?
My undestanding is that the AI aicrafts use less frame rate , so for every aircraft one would make a AI aircraft file for spawing puposes and use it instead of the main file.
Is this accurate ? Any input is welcomed !

The following might be said of AI:

- As you noted, AI models can be a bit easier on frame rates if they are designed for that purpose. This can be accomplished by using lower resolution textures and such. In addition, AI versions don't need virtual cockpits and so use up fewer resources.

- Since AI models would only be flown against, their characteristics can be tweaked for better gameplay. One example are the flexible gunners on non-player aircraft, which some folks claim tend to be deadly accurate. Their gunning skills can be upgraded or downgraded as needed by engineering AI versions.

- Models built without a virtual cockpit aren't really flyable, so sometimes we just call them AI versions rather than incomplete.

One thing some of us do with AI aircraft is fit a weighted, invisible pylon to the aircraft, that simulates the weight of the fuel load and crew. As it's a pylon, it won't be ejected when the aircraft goes into combat, as a drop-tank or bomb would be.

AI planes

The real advantage of making AI planes is the fact that you need not worry about viewing the plane from close distances and can use the non AI model's LOD 50 as your main model thereby reducing the framerate hit a huge amount.

The AI Lancasters and Halifaxes are perfect examples. If you use the non-AI plane you can get 5-6 in the sky. Using the AI you can double or triple that easily.

As far a textures, using the 1024 or 2048 does not make much of a difference in framerates (1-2 maybe).

AI planes are not difficult to make, but as I said above the real advantage is making one purposefully from the beginning to take advantage of the options you have while making the mesh.

Ted correct me if Im wrong but LOD's can only be set in the modelling stage and not by anything you could adjust after the model is finished, yes?

Ted,
For night time flying I have had many more in a mission but it helps to reduce the textures even more than 1024 (which I do for my ai versions) and of course delete pits etc. I am still hoping to replicate the 1000 bomber raids; not that one would ever see them all at once. A bigger problem with fps is the effects of the bombing; fire and smoke for example.

Being ignorant about LODs, is that something that can be changed when making one's own ai's?

Yes, I use AI aircraft in my personal missions, it allows me to fill the sky with enemy aircraft..
The AI do help alot when it comes to improving framerates in loaded flights..with the use of AI aircraft I can load large amounts of aircraft in a Mission..

hi Owen, is there a way to do that also in QC to simulate big fighters encounter with 20 plus each side?

AI's

You make the LOD's in gmax/max as part of the overall model. You can not make them once the model is exported. James, did not realize that the 1024 vs the 2048 mattered all that much, but I guess with 100 planes it would.

I didn't know that. Can it be done to all ai a/c and how?

Easily. I have some examples of fighter-type weight pylons somewhere, and all you need to do is edit the xdp to ensure that it is fitted in every load you need.

Nigel, Let me know when u find them.:salute:

Ted, I saw the ETO Halis had ai's but didn't see any with the ETO Lancs. Maybe later sometime ai's with LOD 50 can be done.

Not that I know of...
Perhaps changing the spawn for the QC set up will allow you to have Large QC fights??
The Default is 8 aircraft..
But I am sure that if one learned which "spawn files" were set up controlling this.. You could increase the numbers and use AI as the default aircraft..By changing these files??
Perhaps one of the Masters here can work this out..
