Aircraft names. Of Beaks, Bones, Sluffs and Stoofs.

Little town just N/W of CFB Baden.Right on the Rhine. Big '104 base. Canadian, but lots of exchange drivers from all NATO air arms. Any one remember TIFFANY'S? ( I have to check spelling. nope. Hugelsheim) )
Or the BEER TENT? Me a service brat, too.I know a lot of '104 drivers. Thats why I'm fairly certain that this 'Widow maker' nonesense is a fabrication of media flaks, as is the old hack 'missile with a man in it' P.R. office stuff

"Two Turnin', One Burnin'" = the AJ Savage.
"Type 1 Lighter" was the nickname Japanese Navy aircrews gave to the G4M Betty, in reference to its combustibility when shot at. :icon_lol: A corruption of the official IJN "Type 1 Bomber" designation.
Never heard any stories of how the F2H Banshee got nicknamed "Banjo", maybe just a variation of the name.

Its a great image, though, Granpaw Petibone picking and grinning in the cockpit while waiting on the shuttle!

For some unknown reason, I thought you were messing with me and made this "Hugelsheim" up, as it sounds like a name of a fictional german township that only native english speakers could come up with. Similar to "Kugelstadt" in Return To Castle Wolfenstein.

That's why I've asked.

P.S: Yes, I'm lacking a few litres of kerosene in my think tank up there. But that's okay, fuel is too expensive nowadays anyways.

:icon_lol:

Pretty little town. A lot quieter, these days, than back when Starfighters flew. They grow some great weiss spargle there, and the fisher teams beer tent is the stuff of legend, though the climb up the hill to get home at night is pretty rough with a full load on!
Uderstand the braingas thing. Mines erratic as hell. Got it cheap at a war surplus outlet!

Isn't CFB Baden used as a commercial airport now?

Not the flattest terrain in that area indeed.

Lived in the Rhein-Neckar area for eleven years. Was lucky enough though for not having to climb any hills on my way home. :icon_lol:

I think a good part of mine was guzzled away by the Bundeswehr and that darn Leopard 2.

In all the time I was in the Navy, I never heard anyone ever call the Helldiver, "Son of a bitch 2nd class". This came out much later after the war. - It's too much of a mouthful.
It was always the "Beast" or the "Two-Cee" but never that ficticious name that some writer, who wasn't even born during the war, came up with.

I got to thinking about the names that aircaft receive from their makers, and purchasers, versus
the names given by their aircrews and maintainers. Thought it might make for an interesting
thread/ quiz, so- here's is a short list of cant names for some aircraft, see if you can
name the plane, and add any you know of! Some have been used on different aircraft, some aircraft attract multiple
names depending on era and opperator. If you know the origin of the handle, do tell! Some are well known,
some are obscure.
