Aircraft Reflections. How to...

Hi

Because of a "shiny" part of a repaint, I was advised by the author to turn "aircraft reflections off" in Aircraft Section just like in FS 2004.

Can't find it when running FSX/Accel, have to go to fsx.cfg. Changed it there, same result...nil...is there a way to turn reflections on/off when running FSX?

BTW, there are 2 files one fsx.cfg other fsx.cfg.txt...do I need this last one?

Also found "image quality=0", is this all right or should be =1 or any other

And, forgive me, just one more thing...why do I change value to TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096, and it keeps turning back to 1024?

I'll comment only on the TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 issue at the moment as I am not on my FSX rig and can't recall about aircraft reflections.

This setting is automatically changed to the default 1024 every time you make a change from within the FSX menus and sliders. You need to go back and edit it again if you need it to be 4096.

As for the fsx.cfg.txt, that should normally not be there. It is probably saved after you edited the fsx.cfg with notepad and chose to save it as a txt document. You can delete it, provided you check the fsx.cfg and make sure that it includes the entries you want it to include. FSX will ignore the .txt anyway.

FSX should use an envmap file if provided in aircraft texture folder in preference to the default.
You might try loading a specific envmap.bmp into the aircraft texture folder you are having a problem with as suggested here:

A google search on envmap might yield other alternatives to try.

GlobalEnv_AC_Chrome.dds and GlobalEnvTest.dds files should work the same way (a search in my fsx library shows custom versions in Alabeo, LHC, and RealAir aircraft).
They are used mostly for the image shown in reflections but also have a hand in amount of reflection if I recall correctly.
There several variations of these on various sites as well.

Beaufighter.
The shine in aircraft paint comes from the Alpha's.

2 Examples.....
Very dark gray (almost black) Alphas. Results in Chrome look


White alphas. results in Dull Faded look....

If you have a paint program and the paint kit for the aircraft you want done, you can do the Alphas in a lighter gray or even white, which will make the paint a flat paint....with little to no shine.....
These are in the T_ALPHA and T-SPEC_ALPHA.
I may be wrong in the answer to this, forgive me if I am....This is how I get the Chrome look to the A2A P51D paints I have done, and the Flat paint look.....The darker the gray the more shine, Like on Berlin Express, and White was used to achieve the Faded look of the war weary Tommy's Dad repaint, I did.

What you are describing is not reflections.

As you have already found out you can not turn off reflections in FSX like you did FS9.

Is this a FSX native model or FS9 port over?

Shine in FSX is controlled by a combination of material and textures.

Like Trucker has said I would look at your alpha. The alpha might be too aggressive in that location.

This is really of no importance...think this was a repaint for 2004...

And have not the expertize needeed to change alphas.

Anyway, this was usefull, learn why I kept getting 1024 on texture max load even when i changed it to 4096....

I have an Air Portugal paint wich works perfectly on a Airbus 319, I'll use this one when I want to "fly" my colours...34 years on TAP planes...
