Airfield fix safe to use?

When I start ETO from desktop I automatically start with the pilot sitting on the boxes, a B24 at an airfield, and the B24 exploding in flames as it is too close to an unknown object. I have files which I downloaded from SOH and used many years ago on my original CFS3 that modified the

airbase_dual_3.xml
airbase_single_2.xml
airbase_triple_1.xml

files so that bigger aircraft like the B24, B17, B29 etc don't explode when launching the game.

Is this OK to use on ETO, or is there some other workaround to avoid the exploding bombers?

Thanks Pat,

The ETO mission builder Briefing-Start page says that Abbeville-Drucat, Abbeville France airbase is the default airbase used for animations before the mission starts. However when I chose Free Flight the airfield was listed as RAF Straverton, Glouctershire.

If I select Abbeville as the airfield location in Free Flight then I get a CTD when trying to start a Free Flight in Era 2 with the B24. However when I next start CFS3 in Era 2 I have a B24 on a different airfield that could be Abbevile, and the B24 doesn't explode.

With the 2,3 and 4 prop planes there are airbases that are not meant to host them IN QC. Thy are for the smiler planes. What is happening is your wing is hitting the windsock. You can fix this if you go into your ETO facilities folder find the airbase you want to fly in QC with the bigger planes open it with notepad and look for the line that looks like this <Unit Type="ACC_windsock" Position/Angle=/> and change the position. Most of the airbases have different position/angle of the windsock.

I've had a look at this and drawn a blank for a minute. Everything seems as it should be and yet when ending a mission the airfield you're at in the UI isn't the one selected in 'location'.

I don't think it's the cutscenes entries - I thought it might be a nationality issue.

Is anyone else having this problem? Could someone try a small aircraft taking off from Abbeville France in eras 1 & 2 please?

I get the same thing too. I have the ALG installed as per the strings on the dev. server. Most of the time I end up there in the UI but sometimes at a different airfield which causes my bigger a/c to blow up... Can't identify it at once but it has the Belfast hangars in view (I think the very same you created for Kenley), although I concur that it must be the windsock.

BTW, that's in Era 5 (1945)

Yes the windsock is a problem with bigger a/c, but the main issue here is that the UI airfield isn't the same as selected, I wonder if we've reached some sort of limit somewhere? I'll persevere with this one!

:wavey:Hi Pat Checked it out. Eras 1 & 2

No problems with small planes
B-24s,FP B-17s,B-25s go :pop4:

AvH B-17s were ok, seem like that windsock very close to wing.

The other nationalities large aircraft seem OK, seems l only usa is affected, Gona check British again to make sure.

Checked British & German again JU88s and some lancasters go :pop4:

Mmmm..I think the quickest fix for those that this affects is to either delete or remove the ACC_windsock model from your buildings folder. Not ideal but it will do the trick. I haven't time to trawl through all the airfield facilities that this crops up on at the moment.

edit.. I've just had a look at the number involved, I'll get it sorted for the next upodate.

Pat :)

:wavey:Removed ACC_windsock. No more:pop4: Thanx Pat:guinness:

The problem is in the ACC_Windsock.MD3 file.

Under the "\<install folder>\buildings\ACC_Windsock" folder there are two .MD3 files. One is "ACC_windsock.MD3" dated 2/2/2009 and the other is "windsock.MD3" dated 7/20/2005. I renamed (or you could delete) the file dated 2/2/2009 and then renamed the "windsock.MD3" file dated 7/20/2005 to "ACC_windsock.MD3" and that solved the problem.

What I noticed was that the newer windsock.MD3 file was causing the windsock pole to randomly jump around on the airfield display causing large aircraft to explode and also causing smaller aircraft to have damage.

Yep, the older model has no damage states (hadn't learned that back then) but the newer one does, hence the explosions.
For the next ETO install the windsock has been moved at all airfields where using larger a/c caused a problem.

I noticed this as well, even with smaller aircraft. I think there may even be one or two other bases where this happens. (Don't remember which.) There will be an explosion, you will hear a pilot say "taking damage" and then the wing tip will break off. No biggee though.

And I have also noticed that after flying at certain (a limited number) of airfields, when I return, I'm back at a "default" airfield. Or at least, when the UI appears, it seems to be the same field over again, seemingly in Great Britain. The underlying airfield in the location file hasn't changed though.

Thanks for the info! I kept losing the wingtip of me beaufighter - I actually edited a few airbases to move the windsock a bit but it was too big a job. Hence the no damage model trick is the go.

Anyway those big old birds shouldn't be on era 1 or 2 airfields :mixedsmi:
