Airfix models

Hi Collin,

My dad and I spent many a happy hour in the basement with the air rifle. We started with plastic soldiers and moved up to my ship and plane models. I'm pretty sure there are several pilots MIA somewhere down there!

When engaging a battleship (once the Arizona, twice the Bismarck), we would get his binoculars and take turns as spotter and gunner, what a great time we had!

Mom was very adamant that we clean up every piece of plastic and pick up every BB from the floor, a mess would not be tolerated.

Hi all,
When i was a kid i made dozens of model ships by airfix. One afternoon a friend and i decided we would have a sea battle in the backgarden.97 airfix warships were subsequently split into 2 fleets.Everything from destroyers to carriers. We then blew the hell out of each others fleet with air rifles.Great fun, But it was the end of my model ship collection.

Backyard Battles..

I guess we were a little more destructive in our ingenuity...

When we were 10, my buddy Jon and I collected up all the neighborhood kids' model ships and packed their interiors with firecrackers... making sure that at least a few fuses were sticking out of the hulls...

We then floated them in his family's back yard pool, added a layer of gasoline and lighter fluid (!!!) and lit the water ablaze just after dark. The first ship to explode was a hoot... then another... and another... :pop4:

Yes, it was a minor catastrophe. And cause for a month-long grounding.

Yes, we partially melted the plastic pool liner. And YES, we nearly burned down the garage when a destroyer group exploded and sprayed the back wall with burning water... but how impressive a memory is THAT ?

Ah, those WERE the days...

This all sounds all too familiar :icon_twi:. We also did a little number using carbide granules for miner's lamps & water in a sealed container & smoldering 'punk fuse'. Basically mini acetylene bombs with a wicked blue flame. We had to be well timed to avoid potential disaster!

Air Rifles and Firecrackers

Ha ha! Yes, my models usually met the same fate after I tired of them sitting on my desk or bureau. I had a Crossman pneumatic air rifle that was also great for small game animals. It was absolute death on polystyrene. Tank models were my favorite targets and that rifle shot though them like a depleted uranium sabot from a 120mm main tank gun through a T-72.

Today I have an RWS .20 calibre air rifle that would have made me drool back in the day.

Once when I had a clearout of old airplane models - mainly old Airfix and Revell 1/72nd things, I tied about 20 to a revolving clothes line. Then I'd spin the line and take potshots with the air rifle - hours of fun....... (we lived in the country....) - especially as it was a single shot, so every shot had to count. The .177 slug used to take'em down though, when it did connect...

I think you are right Oldwheat, it's been a long time. I went from Strombecker to Auroa's whatever-size-fits-the-box scale. I remember an all black Fw 190. I had a fleet of Reville WWII ships that I "sank" with my trusty old Daisey BB gun. Shades of Ralphy. :rocket:
