Airfix models

Back in the sixties the Airfix kits were made available in poly bags for fifty cents apiece at the local Woolworths five and dime.
I built a number of them and finally dispatched them with my Range Rider BB gun. Great fun!

Without getting into a political discussion here, you all do realize that now of days we would be arrested and prosecuted for some of the things we did for fun then.........I mean, I used to do the same with small pieces of copper water pipes, end caps, waterproof fuse, and black powder. Now they call those pipe bombs and they are on some list of terrorist items. Sure made those models blow up nice though.

I guess we were a little more destructive in our ingenuity...

When we were 10, my buddy Jon and I collected up all the neighborhood kids' model ships and packed their interiors with firecrackers... making sure that at least a few fuses were sticking out of the hulls...

We then floated them in his family's back yard pool, added a layer of gasoline and lighter fluid (!!!) and lit the water ablaze just after dark. The first ship to explode was a hoot... then another... and another... :pop4:

Yes, it was a minor catastrophe. And cause for a month-long grounding.

Yes, we partially melted the plastic pool liner. And YES, we nearly burned down the garage when a destroyer group exploded and sprayed the back wall with burning water... but how impressive a memory is THAT ?

Ah, those WERE the days...

. . . did something similar with our F100 and F105 models.

While not having the experience of pipe bombs at such a young age, I did have a load of large "bangers" from 'Guy Fawks' day which went into a large bomb underneath the rails of my OO gauge railway. Problem was the fuse was mistimed and instead of blowing up the rails in front of the train it blew when the train was crossing over it. Have you ever seen a Britannia class loco fly?:icon_lol:

And I didn't even admit to the real hairy stuff. It would have made the 10:00 news! Times have changed a lot.

Well the bidding has finished, they went for £29.01 + £8.55 p&p.

Thought someone might wanna know what happened to the original subject of this thread.

Now lets get back to the blowing up part.:icon29::jump::icon_lol:
