Airliner advice

Big generalisation but for those of you who fly "Heavy metal" what's out there? Pay or free it doesn't matter, I'm interested in systems, visuals, add-ons and even the best airports to fly in and out of.
All opinions greatfully received as it is an area of Fsim that we don't often cover here. If you're not a member but have some input to offer, sign up and post.:engel016:

Cheers,

Roger.

Roger,

When I fly tubes, my favorite is the DC-9. Just have always liked the way it handles, whether it's the payware SkySimulations version, or the freeware one.

I suppose part of my preference for that aircraft is also because of all the dets I went on, and it was a Navy C-9 that provided transportation.

As for airports? For me, that would be NAS Whidbey Island, and Andersen AFB, Guam. Civilian airports, I like Chattanooga, and Indianapolis. Chattanooga is the airport I fly out of for trips in real life (cannot stand Atlanta), and Indy is where I grew up.

I think that each of the tubeliner fan has his own favourite :)
Mine is Level-D 767. Well, the model is a little bit old, there are some which offer better visuals. But what forced me to purchase was the manual and tutorial flight script with very detailed pictures. It is very well written with some sense of humor and it is great for people, like me, who have never flown the tubeliners in the FS world before. The addon has some simple "missions" and takes advantage of some FSX goodies.
So, a bit older model, but with great system modelling and a very, very good manual.

Fairly extensive, but with some simplifications in the vertical nav mode. Best to refer to this page http://www.aerosoft.com/cgi-local/us/iboshop.cgi?showd,,11177_1 the big advantage is you can choose to keep it simply and fly hands on and use systems as you want to or go the full hog as far as the simulation allows. If you want the full system experience and a degree to go with it, then I believe the big iron PMDG models are the way to go.

Another option is to go small with the Flight1 Cessna Mustang which has nice system modeling along airliner lines, but the advantage of small airfield access.

It depends if you want to fly steam gauges or glass panels.
When i want to fly old irons i enjoy CS boeing 707 for the modern ones it's the CS Boeing 767 i use (she needs some switch flickering but mostly on the overhead panel to get you ready for take off tho). As for Aerosoft's A320 i wish i could enjoy it because it's really a nice looking model BUT i have constant CTDs with it... It seems very few have this problem and Aerosoft says it's a memory issue due to FSX itself and that it can't be fixed...

For airports my favourite testing place is Bill's Dillingham you can take off and land big things there even if it's not used by big planes. :jump:
Another one that have lots of "charms" IMHO is Orbx's Tamworth. For bigger airports Orbx's Melbourne and Brisbanne are great but needs a strong system to be smooth.
In Europe i like Aerosoft's WeezeX, it's an old cold war RAF base in Germany used by low cost companies. The cool thing is that all the military infrastructures are still there.:salute:

I agree about ORBX Tamworth which is also good for a mix of aircraft types, but Brisbane just won't run smooth for me, however the latest ORBX Cairns is just fantastic.

I've just watched a video of Cairns and it looks great and if you say it's smoother than Brisbane then i have to buy it before Orbx Christmas sale ends!

I'm also curious about Canberra.

Favorite tubers in my hanger:

A2A Boeing 377 w/Accusim
Most entertaining and interesting to fly of all my tubers because of the great systems modeling and the great view out the front for touring. Visuals inside and out are top of the line.

Coolskys MD-80 & MD-80 Pro
Still pretty sure these are still the only true FSX MD-80 models. The VC cockpits are a little dated by today's standards but the exteriors look great in the new McPhat HD repaints. The FMC in the MD-80 Pro is a tiny bit more in-depth than the non-Pro.

Captain Sim Boeing 727
Enough systems modeling to not get boring and the great looks of the CS VC style.

CaptainSim Boeing 707
Haven't been able to spend much time in her yet, but she looks great and the systems seem to be a step up from the B727.

Eaglesoft Cessna CitationX 2.0
Great baby tuber when you need to get somewhere really quickly. The systems in this one make me have to get out the manual to set up the flight each time. The other ones I've mentioned are almost jump in and go types compared to this one.

CaptainSim Lockheed L-100-30
The stretched 130 in civi-cargo hauling paints. Great CS visuals inside and out, but with minimal systems modeling, but like the B377 the view from up front is great.

I would go for the PMDG 747 if you want the really heavy stuff. I didn't find it too overwhelming to handle. Of course I had the old PSS 747 panel since FS2k2 and was kind of familiar with the 747-400 layout. And the price isn't bad, you can find the Aerosoft boxed versions on Amazon for 20-30 bucks. That isn't bad considering the original retail price was around 80 I think. I would consider PMDG the 'accusim' of jet airliners. Very detailed model, systems, sounds...like all the ambient cockpit sounds/fans..etc. If you want classic I think the CS 727 or 707 is a good bet.

The A2A 377 looks beautiful but I haven't pulled the trigger to get it yet because I hope they get around to applying the B-17 interactive crew bit to it. I can't imagine trying to fly an instrument approach while running back and fourth between all the crew stations :D

Some future releases to look foward to the PMDG 737NG which will cover all the airliner variants and I believe the BBJ will be down the road after that. Also the CS 737-200 looks like it will be really nice.

Good luck Roger.

By what you said, the PMDG MD-11 is easily the best option available right now. It is a more modern jet so its systems are different from the typical boeing systems and avionics. I even maintain a pretty decent frame rate when flying it, unlike the PMDG 747.

Second recommendation is definitely the Level-D 767. It is legendary, even moreso now that the winglet version is out.

CS Boeing 767 over Oahu.
