Albatros in Australia

The Bordeaux-Red Baron
On the Australian War Memorial website (http://www.awm.gov.au) I found these pics of an Albatros restauration. Very interesting for me as a hobby skinner is the original Lozenge fabric - it's very colourful and looks like new.
Perhaps someone else here knows more about this plane?

.... I would not go by this printed fabric as correct. For the real historical reference to the correct colors, pattern and fabric start here ... Lozenge decal test it for all

It looks like a dye job on modern polyester aircraft fabric ti me.

Nice pictures.

Actually it is original Egyptian linen fabric (found at great expense), printed by an original press with original dyes found by the researchers of the Australian War Memorial team through a German WWI Historical society. The AWM team that did the restorations of all the WWI aircraft for the "Great War In The Air" exhibition were very thorough.

There is a blog at the AWM site that provides a brief run down of the restoration programme, but it's somewhat limited in detail. The team are however putting together a series of articles for publication on all the aircraft restored. Will make for rivetting reading. :)

Thanks a lot, Pips. Seems, now you have tought WomenFly2 something. But I must admit, I was also unsure, if that colour-intensive print could be original. Perhaps you could report about this, when you find more?

So, no one say, Germans were rather greyish people - vee added color to ze var. Vee had ze Flyink Ssircuss (lol) !

And don't forget that at this time they were putting snazzy 2-tone paintjobs on their battleships :).

Btw. That australian albatros is included in p3 too. ltn. Rudolf Clauss flew it in jasta 29

Hi Guys,

many years ago I actually had the pleasure of being allowed to sit in this plane, along with their original SE5a. the Albatross was donated to the Australian government at the end of the war as a war trophy (for want of a better word) it was complete when sent out to Australia.

both the Alb and SE5 are being refferbished to become the centre peice of a new display hall at the Memorial.

If your ever in Australia, city of Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory to be precise, please take a look at the Australian War Memorial, it is truely one of the great historical memorial sites to WWI (and all other wars this country has taken part in.) in the world.

regards Rob.

No, WF2 is correct - That shot of the LOZENGE camouflage is from the 1960's restoration fabric prior to the new linen as per pips post, which is the real deal.

Wow - you guys are really on your hoofs; seems, you got them all! Great work!

Yeah, I thought, she wouldn't make a mistake so easily, cause she's not only a lady - she's a pilot too...
