Retired SOH Admin
Ladies and Gentleman of the FS2002/2004 Forum.

It is with great pride that I am going to give you a link to a thread over in the Newshawks forum by the Ringmaster of our Beloved Circus, Ickie.

This thread is one that will bring a lot of joy to a lot of peope....but also will come with a greater responsibility for all our members.

Keep these words in mind as you read the thread:

If you want to dance, you have to pay the fiddler.

Now...go forth, read the thread from Ickie, let is sink in and do what needs to be done!!!!

I have posted in the other thread also.

Here's an idea.

A large proportion of people who frequent these forums are just pursuing a hobby and to charge for a site like this, no matter what the reason, will always engender a negative result and members will drift away. Human nature..

May I offer a possible solution?

Besides those willing and able to donate something to the running costs, I do not think it unreasonable to charge those payware companies that frequent and use these forums to announce and launch new product. Ordinarily (I include AH in this) we would pay for conventional advertising to promote our wares so why should this be any different?

There's strong following for many brands here and don't tell me that most of us don't use this place for market research or to canvas for the next release.

I hope I speak for most of my contemporaries when I say that we would pay a fee quite happily to have representation and access to the SOH members. It is valuable to us and always has been.

May I suggest a poll (private if you like) amongst payware companies to establish a reaction?

Hello Baz --

I am a bit surprised that no one has responded to your post....

I for one appreciate your offering to provide solutions, even tho I am just a "grunt" here at the SOH. You, representing Aeroplane Heaven, are the only major player that I have seen (correct me if I am wrong) who has come forth with an idea to present to SOH, solely with the intent on helping support this site.

My comments and opinions are my own, and most likely do not reflect everyone else's opinions here so may I just say this...

SOH is compleately member driven and supported. Because of this, SOH Staff members do not have to deal with pop-up ads and what-not as a requirement for additional financial help from other major players in the Flight Sim World. I'm not saying that AH would require this... I guess I'm not really clear on what you would require in return for your offering.

Because SOH has such a strong member following and the majority of its members believe that what Ickie and his staff are providing is worthwhile, they come together with the finances to pay for the web hosting and maintainence fees solely for that reason, and that makes SOH unique :medals:

The fact that so many come together to support SOH says alot about the calibre of people that call SOH home, and I like it that way. But it's just my opinion, and the main reason I help to support SOH.

Besides, this isn't just another flightsim forum, SOH is family, SOH is my flightsim home.

No worries, just and idea is all. I don't think t need be anything fancy, it s just a way for those who actually make money (however small :icon_lol:) from activities associated with this site, to support it. Seems fair to me.:engel016:

There's nothing stopping payware companies making a regular donation to the main donation thread. If you check the donor listing you will find that A2A made a contribution a while ago along with a few other developers.

Some of us already do, without making a big fuss about it.
Also bear in mind that most developer 'companies' are one-man bands with more cost than revenue ;-)
