All those gauges

Seems to me that at one time I saw a program that removed all duplicate gauge files from the gauge folder in FS9. Is this true and is it easy to use?
Have lots of "cabinet files" in there, can those be deleted without harm?
Thanks everyone
Bob

Remember though... Sometimes it will effect running gauges that you use. You'll open a plane and suddenly gauges are missing...

Just a warning. Maybe its fixed now with these programs, but I have heard of people accidentally erasing gauges they were using.

When I try this stuff I almost always screw things up. Guess we will leave it as is. What about those that are cabinet files, can they go?

Man, see that is a difficult question. A CAB file is a folder 'compressed' with gauges in it. Basically a gauge folder for a plane, but zipped in a compression format for FS. If you take out any that are stock planes like FS came with, some of the gauges in other planes will be using those. People (developers) will 'hot wire' gauge configs into other aircraft CAB files. So if you get rid of some, then suddenly some planes dont have a altimeter or battery switch, etc.

You could pull a bunch of gauges and keep them in a backup folder and when you are satisified they didnt effect anything, then delete them. That way you have played it safe.

Also, you can always reload aircraft that suddenly have missing gauges.

I dont mean to push the 'extra caution', but I have seen alot of people that suddenly have their sims or planes all out of whack and sometimes it was from deleting things they thought they didnt need anymore.

the safest way is to put gauges in the panel folder, and to save harddrive space, you can alias the gauge by using the line: (if you have more than one aircraft calling for the same gauge)

gauge00=..\aircraft\aircraftname\panel\gaugename.cab

my main gauge folder is completely default with no extra files at all.

Can you still alias a panel if the gauges are stored in that folder and not in the FS9/gauges folder?

In other words can I alias the panel from the say Iris Strike Eagle to the Coral F-15, if all of the gauge file are in the Iris Strike Eagle panel folder?:isadizzy:

you sure can. For your example, you would have

Iris F-15\Panel\All panel files here, including gauges and panel.cfg

Coral F-15\Panel\Panel.cfg, the only file here is this cfg. In it, it calls for the Iris F-15:

[fltsim]
alias=Iris F-15\panel

btw, you can use this method for models, sounds, textures and gauges, but not effects. If you're crazy enough/or has the time, you can actually re-arrange the entire FS9 folders to make it super efficient. For example, you can make a new sound folder called Aircraft Sounds (so it's sorted first with defrag), and within this folder, you can have F-15, F-14, Spitfire, etc. Now when you install a new aircraft, you can alias the sounds to these files.

I don't do the above, but i do alias textures all the time. For example, the Maule Ski/Wheel/Tundra/ all use same textures. So now you can split the textures between all the models. For example:

Maule Ski\Texture.red

Maule Wheel\Texture.white

Maule Tundra\Texture.black

Now open the aircraft.cfg for Maule Ski, and alias the two additional textures (white and black). Now you basically have 3 textures for 3 models, without having duplicates. Does this make sense at all? It takes some work, but FS9 runs sooooo smooth if you optimize it this way....almost no load time for anything (except scenery).

Thanks Feng! I knew that the sounds alias-ed fine but wasn't sure if the gauge files had to be in the FS9\gauge folder in order to alias.
