Alpha Sim F8F Bearcat VC problem

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
I have the Alpha Sim F8F Bearcat for FS9 installed. I dropped in the panel set I did up for the CFS2 version of the plane (also by Alpha Sim..same plane). The gauges show up on the 2D panel, but not on the VC. I compared the VC header section in the FS9 version and it is identical to the VC header section in the CFS2 version. I swapped the VC gauges to see if it would show other gauges...nope.

Does anyone have the AS Bearcat installed and have working VC gauges? If so, would you be willing to share the panel config and gauges so I can get my Bearcat fully gauged.

OBIO

I haven't got a vc to work in this one. The original vc is just a painted-looking affair, including non working gauges.

Similar to you, I just aliased the panel to Alpha Bleu Ciel's F8F_Bearcat panel.2 and live with the 2D panel.

Actually, I don't fly the AlphaSim one much for that reason.

I fly both and also believe the AS VC is just painted with non working gauges but am puzzled why there are VC Cockpit gauge entries in the panel.cfg

I actually like the visual model of the AS a/c and likewise use the ABC panel in the AS plane + lawdog sounds. Interested to know if you discover anything further. New Bearcat appears to be on the way from the folks that did the Hellcat.

After checking the panel.cfg file, while there is a vc entry, there are no gauge entries in the vc section. Actually no gauge entries anywhere in the cfg file until you add a panel yourself and the gauges to go along with it. Possibly the vc entry is there only to ensure the vc shows in the sim and nothing more.

I did a panel set for the CFS2 version of the plane....and the VC gauges work just fine in that plane. So, I am mystified why the VC gauges won't show in the FS9 version. Quite odd. Especially considering that the plane was a former payware package....just seems odd that a plane of this quality would not have working VC gauges.

OBIO

only guessing here, that you're using stock fs/cfs gauges and windows vista?

In which case its the microsoft copyright protection within 'vista' thats stopping things showing.
copy the gauge(s) and rename to something different, then put new names in panel.cfg file and should be ok

While I do have an brand new, never been used Vista installation package.....it will remain brand new and will never be used...at least not by me.

I am running XP Home Edition, upgraded to SP3. Using CFS2 gauges in the CFS2 install, copied those gauges to the FS9 Gauges folder...they show up on the 2D panel but not the VC...so I went into the VC and swapped them out for some gauges from the stock FS9 DC3...and still they refuse to make a public appearance.

Double checked in CFS2 to make sure that the VC gauges work in the Bearcat there...and they do. Can't figure out why the VC gauges don't work in the FS9 version of the plane.

Who did the Hellcat and were can one find it....would love a Non-CFS2 Hellcat to add to my FS9 collection.

Payware bird:

Back to the AS F8F - just went for a spin in FSX - it works fine there but just like in FS9, no VC gauges for me.

This is really a mystery! It must have worked in FS9 if it works in CFS2, wouldn't you think? Might just try re downloading the originals again.

I like this AS Bearcat with the belly tank. Need to tweak my air.cfg - it needs some more pitch stability and it accelerates down the runway perhaps a little to rapidly!

My initial thoughts were also a panel cfg issue ( see my PM Tim ), but ?, I think there were some changes when you compiled the model from CFS2 to FS9, essentially it was the same model but the compiler was different.

I'm really struggling to remember that far back but CFS2 models would work in FS9 but some functions did not, it could be that the VC gaiges wasnt a part that transposed. I know there was a re mould to FS9, I'm fairly sure there was ?, so it might be that the actual freeware *.mdl isnt a FS9 one but an older CFS2 one, you'd have to open the *.mdl with a hex editor and in the text at the top is a clue to which sim it is aimed at, FS9 ones need a code of MDL8 or a FS2002 SDK part of the script, not sure what the CFS2 one needs, I dont have any CFS2 models kicking around any more I'm afraid ?, well maybe on an old CD, goodness knows where they have hidden themselves LOL.

I'll dig around a little as I'm pretty sure it did have VC gauges in FS9 when it was payware, what y'all need is someone who paid for it to chime in and post their Vpanel cfg section.

Looking at the date and time on the 2 MLDs, they appear to be different files...at least they have different dates and times listed as creation/modification dates. Have not opened them with a hex editor yet....gotta get out the door to take my wife shopping.

Thanks for chiming in Michael....hopefully we can get this thing fuggered out and get the gauges in the FS9 VC....the plane is well done and it's a shame not to have it at 100%

Oh..the model files are from separate downloads....the CFS2 package and the FS9 package are separate dedicated packages.

OBIO

Tim,

Ok the plot thickens !, I opened both the CFS2 and the FS9 mdls and guess what, the FS9 one doesnt have a VC gauge projection screen ?, it just isnt there, well not with the name $vpanel, it is in every other model I checked.

Now this means two things, either it was stripped out when made freeware ( highly unlikely given Dec 02 date stamp ), or it just never had one, even more unlikely as it was payware and CFS had VC gauges so the FS9 one should as well...they are both compiled differently for each sim, and yes the correct mdl is shipped with each download.

So if it wasnt stripped out and it did have one when payware, then the only answer is that the projection screen name is not $vpanel, but something else ?. What ever it is, it has to be in the mdl and viewable with a Hex editor, it would be under the interior model texture calling near the bottom, all of the others are there, but they are all accounted for with other textures, none of the names jump out as a VC projection screen name.

Which leads me full circle to believe that it never had one, but then for payware....and round we go again !.

Really need someone who has it working in FS9 to chip in and let us klnow what their VC panel section looks like.

I'll have another look again tomorrow, I might have an old working copy buried deep somewhere, not just the ones from Alphasims site.

the plot thickens !,

Took the words, Michael.

AS F8F was my very first FS9 payware add on but I may have adulterated it after at least 3/4 HDD failures and Bob Chicolo'ed updated it etc. Have a sadly (no, these days, quite normally) hazy recollection that the FS9 VC did have working gauges but I will not be able dig out my original d/l.

If all else fails we can always ask the man himself, Phil Perrot . ..

:friday:

I haven't tested it, but Bob Chicilo did an update for it, including VC.

Here's his config

Still no joy on getting the VC gauges to show on this plane.

Does anyone have the plane from when it was payware? Would love to get the VC gauges going again in this plane.

Just went and looked in my archives and these are the files I have for it.

ALPHA Bearcat FS04.zip
ALPHA F8F-1 Bearcat CFS2.zip
ALPHA F8F-1 Bearcat FS2002.zip

Unzipped the {ALPHA F8F-1 Bearcat FS2002.zip} and had this:-

ALPHA F8F-1 Bearcat/
model
panel
sound
texture
Aircraft.cfg
Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat.air
Readme !!!!.txt

Gauges/
Alpha_Clock.gau
Alpha_HSI.gau
Alpha_Throttle.gau
F4U_Gear.gau
Military_RMI.gau
P51_Airspeed.gau
P51_Altim.gau
P51_Attitude.gau
P51_Flaps.GAU
P51_fuel.GAU
P51_Manifold.gau
P51_Remote_Compass.gau
P51_Rpm.gau
P51_Turn_Bank.gau
P51_Vsi.gau

Unzipped {ALPHA Bearcat FS04.zip}

ALPHA F8F-1 Bearcat/
Aircraft.cfg
F8F_check.htm
F8F_ref.htm
Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat.air

Put the two together and had a VC but the gauges were just painted on.
They didn't function at all.

Hope this helps

I've been digging some more and have to conclude as well that there are no VC gauges, there just isnt the projection poly to show them.

Both mdls were compiled a few months apart in 2002, so it may be that VC technology in FS2002 hadnt been sorted yet and it was a quick patch from CFS2, not a full one.

It is odd that it doesnt have one, later mdl's might have been produced that did have one ?, but those dont seem to be shipped by Alphasim as freeware in the current uploads.

Which panel set did you use in your test? Does it have a gauge set up for the VC panel. Give the panel set I uploaded for the CFS2 Bearcat a try if you haven't already....it uses the original Bearcat 2D panel bmp and has the VC gauges in place.

OBIO

I'm wondering if someone with some skills working with SCASM coding could copy the projection screen info from the SCASM code for the CFS2 model, paste it into the FS2004 model then recompile a working FS2004 MDL that would have working VC gauges.

OBIO

Hiya all.
I have a version of the FS2004 Alpha F8F Bearcat that came with two models, two repaints (French and US Navy) and two panel configs - both with a fully working VC. I have no idea unfortunately when or where I downloaded it, and I am not the world's most technical guy, but if it's any use, here is the working VC panel config:

// Photorealistic F8F-2 Bearcat panel based on web pictures found at
// http://fanakit.chez-alice.fr/BEARCAT%20photoscope/walkaround_bearcat.htm
// and adapted according the Bearcats Pilots Handbook dated December 1, 1949
