Alphasim Tu-160 afterburner effect issue

tommieboy

SOH-CM-2025
I hope someone else still has this big bird on hand.....I have FSX version 1.21 according to the aircraft.cfg

Can someone verify the time it takes for the afterburner effect to kick in. From the time I firewall the throttle, it takes about 25 seconds for the AB effects to kick-in. I know there is some spool lag on some of these engines, but 25 seconds? Maybe I'm just spoiled by Alphasim's B-1B.....:encouragement:

Yes, easy fix. First, go to Flightsim.com and get this file: ab_f16_.zip After unzipping the file, locate the folder named KO_F16_FX and move that folder into your FSX Gauges folder.

Next, under [Window00] in your TU-160 panel config file, comment out these two gauges:

//gauge33=ALPHA_Tu-160!AfterburnerL_1-2, 356,746,40,19 //<-----------
//gauge34=ALPHA_Tu-160!AfterburnerL_3-4, 426,746,41,19
//<-----------
gauge33=ALPHA_Tu-160!PNP_72, 456,594,130,128
gauge34=ALPHA_Tu-160!Sel_CRS, 883,478,45,20
gauge35=ALPHA_Tu-160!Sel_HDG, 833,478,45,20
gauge36=SimIcons1024!ADF Receiver Icon, 230,746,18,18
gauge37=SimIcons1024!Electrical Panel Icon, 290,746,18,18

Next, go down to the Vcockpit section and add the below entry:

[Vcockpit02]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=32,32
visible=0
pixel_size=32,32
texture=$exhaust

gauge00=KO_F16_FX!F16_AB_THROGGLE, 0,0,1,1

Last, got into your TU-160 Aircraft config file and copy & paste the below entry.

[TurbineEngineData]
fuel_flow_gain=1.999//0.005 //<----changed
inlet_area=7.250
rated_N2_rpm=29920.000
static_thrust=55115.000
afterburner_available=1
afterburner_throttle_threshold = 0.80 //0.90 //<----changed
reverser_available=0.000
ThrustSpecificFuelConsumption = 0.7
AfterBurnThrustSpecificFuelConsumption = 1.5

That should significantly improve the AB lightoffs....

Reporting back in......

The mods don't seem to work on my installation. The only visual changes that I notice are:

1. One of the rear exhaust nozzles does not open all the way under full throttle.

2. The default Tu-160 "blue" afterburner effect does show up, but the other default Tu-160 afterburner effects are now AWOL.

Questions:

1. Does it matter that I am using FSX Acceleration?

2. Does the default Light section in the aircraft.cfg also have to be modified? I notice that there are Type 9 and 6 for the burner / afterburner effects. Not sure if this matters.

light.15 = 9, -64.60, 5.44, -9.55, fx_Alpha_Tu160_AB_light

TIA,

Tommy

My config lights section is exactly the same as yours and I have Acceleration. What may be happening is that the way the XML coding in the gauge is written, if you advance the throttles into AB too quickly before the engine is spooled up, you may get an uneven light-off or none at all(your mention of one of the nozzles not opening fully or displaying odd behavior is an indication). Try slowly spooling up the engines to MIL Power, when you have MIL Power, advance into burner and everything should light off fine.

Yep, you are right......seems that fire walling the throttles from idle is a bad idea; slower is better with this bird.
