Alphasim's B-66 Destroyer now freeware

Thanks for the heads up.

Anyone else having an issue getting the FS9 installer to run? Seems to hang up up everytime I run it.

Yep... I use cntrl+alt+del to open the task manager, kill the msiexec.exe*32 and then it will skip to the next screen and I can continue the installation.. Using Windows 7-64 bit without UAC here.

That's interesting. Mal998 and I spent some time this last week reworking on the flight model for FSX so it could be packaged for distribution by Virtavia. Wish we had been told of the change of plans.

In any case, a couple repaints are here.

MSI Installer

You will need to install the Microsoft Installer from the Microsoft's website download section. The information you need is:

Windows Installer 3.0 Redistributable

Brief Description

The Microsoft® Windows® Installer is an application installation and configuration service. WindowsInstaller-KB884016-v2-x86.exe is the redistributable package for installing or upgrading Windows Installer.

After installing this file on your system, the MSI files will load properly. Note added: This is for XP SP2 OS, it would be different for Vista and Win7.

Anyone suggest a sound file for this model? It came aliased to the Lear 45, I am currently using the default 737 sounds but I know the engines on the B-66 are alot noisier that that.

This is definately a keeper, excellent 2D and VC. It was a nice jesture on Virtavia's part to give it to the FS Community as freeware. Good to see that Virtavia is carrying on with the ALPHA tradition. :ernae:

I have been having alot of luck running installers from the desktop, to a temp folder. Then just install the components manually, there was no problem doing the B-66 Installer that way.

Windows installer 5.0 is included with Win7 but is sadly not available for download!
Not sure if downgrading to an earlier version is such a good idea.. BTW A quick search revealed there are a lot of problems with the latest version(s) of the installer.

Thanks Ferry! Worked like a charm.:salute:

I'm currently testing the F-4 sound set from IRIS, but the jury is still out. They have several big sets included with their recent free offerings so a lot to chose from.

It's not my cup of tea, but I never turn down anything free from Alpha/Virtavia! :salute: So I downloaded the installer, ran it into a temp folder, zipped up the output, uninstalled via the Add/Remove Programs list, then stored the zip!

Try this one, it's a sound pack for the B-52, but it's loud and has that classic screech of older turobo jets.

I used to work around it's sibling the EKA-3 when they were on the Saratoga in 1980, two things I remember, LOUD and dirty black smoke.

B-66 Destroyer

Thanks for the heads up Clarke.

If any of you have the old F-1 Sabre v. Mig package, it has a great turbojet sound pack. Obio also uploaded to the library here a nice turbo jet sound package a while back.

While jets are not really my cup of tea...there are some that I do like...most of them are Vietnam Era birds or earlier. The B-66 is a bird that I do like. Not that I will fly it a lot...but it will get some stick time...worth having in my hangar for sure.

Thanks Alphasim/Virtavia for another wonderful freeware package.

Thanks to Phil and the AlphaSim team for another great peice of freeware. Very generous

Kind regards

Anyone using Windows IE9 in Win7-64?? I can't get the msi to download. It keeps coming up as a page full of text. With IE8 we could turn off the active-X controls and it would show the file. Can't do that with IE9. I wish they would just zip up the installer the way they used to.

I was able to get the F4 packs, because they were released before the upgrade to IE9. :banghead:

Was able to download on my wife's netbook using Vista Basic and IE8. I could right click and "save as" MSI then download to flash drive. On my rig, Win 7-64 running IE9, it saves as a text file. Any ideas???

BTW...the FSX version has all the modifications to the flight model, that were done by Frank and myself.

Also I gave Frank a set of my modified FS9 files and I have given the Ok for him to make them available to anyone who wishes to have them.

Hope you all find them to your liking!

If anyone wants our updated flight model files for FS9 just PM me with your email address. The FSX package also includes new airdam textures to plug up that hole folks who had previously flown it in FSX have seen -- not an issue in FS9.
