An upgrade and Phase3

Dear All,
As I intend to upgrade my mobo and processor this weekend I will have to reload windows and wipe the drive. If I move P2 to another drive reload windows and put it back, will it still work? further.......if it does not, when P3 is released will it be independent of P2 and run in its own separate location, or will it only overwrite P2? ie, can I just wait for and install P3 as a separate game.
regards,
Pike.

From what I understand Pike, Phase 3 will overwrite Phase 2 just as Phase 2 overwrites Phase 1. I don't think you can install both unless you partition your hard drive and dual boot Windows. Do you have a DVD burner? If so, just burn Phase 2 onto a DVD and reinstall after your upgrade. IIRC Phase 3 will install without having Phase 2 already installed. Will be doing some upgrading myself tomorrow. My new 500Gb SATA HD came in yesterday and is already installed. Tomorrow my E8500 CPU and 8800GTX come in. Can't wait!:jump:

You "could" do your hardware swap, and using your existing hard drive on the new platform, boot to the Windows CD and attempt a Windows "repair" routine. "If" it worked, you'd then be faced with having to install the drivers that came with your new motherboard as well as any Windows updates. Because of the significant hardware changes and possible system stability issues, it's an iffy proposition at best, and you'd be much better off to do a clean Windows install and then reinstall CFS3/OFF.

Moving P2 to another drive, reloading Windows and attempting to run your old P2 installation in conjunction with the new OS isn't really an option. There is info from the CFS3/OFF software written to both the registry and the user profile within the original Windows install that won't be present on your new OS install.

As far as how P3 handles installation over an existing P2 install.....not sure....that's one for the Devs.

If you wanna' throw caution to the wind and attempt a Windows Repair as mentioned, I suggest you read the following tutorial *thoroughly* before attempting it.

As far as installing both is concerned, you should be able to without overwriting P2. I'm assuming the install process will be like any other and that you can designate/rename the folder it creates during installation.

Although, upon reflection, I'm guessing that's not what you're asking. P3 will not come as a patch, but as a full package that requires no previous versions to install.

I'm happy to do a complete wipe........I just wanted to know if P3 needs P2 present or not and also CFS3. It sounds as though I will still need CFS3 but not P2 necessarily.

Pike.

Hi Pike

Your last post is correct to my recollection of WM's previous posts.

You need CFS3 but not P2.

Hi all,
Phase 3 is currently having final Beta testing carried out.

Phase 3 will self-install on XP and Vista without the need for having Phase 2 already installed.
