And it's about freaking time!

I just uploaded a 20.5meg package that contains the tweaked and modified and improved freeware FSD International T-38A Talon. 7 new skins. Sharper VC gauge clarity. A much nicer VC texture thanks to Falcon409...it's not perfect, as his original file was for the payware FSD Talon with it's glass cockpit....it tweaked and modified it to work with the analog gauges in the freeware version. It's much much better than the stock texturing, but could be better if I spent more time on it....but I ain't gonna do that. The MDL files have been tweaked to improve the color and visibility of the canopy glass and to fix the transparency issues with the fuselage when the lights are turned on.

Tim Dickens of FSD gave me the green light for this package with the understanding that FSD WILL NOT provide any support for it due to this being a really old package and due to me having my grimy fingers all over it.

The stock skins will still work with this package, but due to the tweaks in the MDL files, the VC cockpit will be highly reflective due to the alpha channel coverage....in time I will redo the stock skins with greater detail, along with another half dozen skins...but I really have no idea when I will get them done.

So, run off to the library and grab the "new and improved" Lockheed T-38 Talon...which is how it will be listed in your aircraft selection window.

Thanks for your time and efforts on this aircraft-looking forward to flying her.....

Question: To install do you unzip to the main FS2004 folder?

Rick, you can just unzip to the FS9 main folder. Everything inside is set to go to the proper folder within FS9.

There is no sound package supplied. The package I use is a dedicated F-5 sound pack that I found on either Flightsim or Avsim. Can't remember who did it, or the name of the zip....I know, that info is about as useful as a milk maid with no hands.

T-38 Talon Update

Thanks Obio!

I've been flying the Iris freeware F-5 Freedom fighter lately and it also suffers from the visible cockpit light through the airframe textures.

While passing through Homestead AFB between assignments last year, I saw a pair of T-38s on the ramp from the Air Training Command in a striking-glossy-multi-color grey cammoflauge pattern.

Here's your newly updated T-38 over Laughlin AFB near Del Rio, Texas. There used to be a slug of T-38s there back in the 70s, but I don't know what they're flying from the base now. Heck, I don't even know if the base is still open.

See? Guys with "ADD" can actually get stuff done:ernae: I've always enjoyed this little beastie. Your tweaks are very welcome. I also have trouble leaving things alone. I bumped up the specular values to 130, added the heat exhaust effect and aliased the sound to the IRIS F-5 freeware.

The coolest part is I can add those myriad freeware liveries for the FSD payware version with just a couple quick bmp swaps with the vc bits and finagling the aircraft.cfg to get around the FSD automatic Load thingie. So am currently assembling a fleet of over 50 of these little suckers.

Thanks again for all you contribute to this great hobby/obsession.

It's still active with T-38's, T-6 Texan II's, and T-1's

OBIO directed me to Flightsim.com, here is the F-5 sound pack that I downloaded.

Thanks,

That is the sound package I use for the F-5. Very nice one in deed.

Where did you find the Thai Air Force skin? I like that a lot. Hadn't thought to try skins for the payware Talon on the freeware bird...but will have to do so.

Claudius

Great video. You really know how to showcase a plane in your videos.

Glad you folks are enjoying the Enhanced T-38. I have loved the Talon ever since I saw the one at the end of the movie "Drag Net" with Tom Hanks and Dan Akroyd. I have always had a thing for training aircraft, and the sleek lines of the T-38 just stole my heart. I have really been putting the bird to the test with my super STOOPID flying skills.

I have the payware T-38 and never heard of upgraded VC textures. How do I get the VC texture that Falcon409 made for the the payware FSD Talon?

Alain

Falcon409's revamped VC panel texture is in the FSX library. It is 2048 by 2048 in size, so you will have to reduce it to 1024 by 1024..which will reduce the quality of the panel a bit, but it will still be far and away better than the stock VC panel texture file.
