Another one sent up.

This is my repaint for the Aeroplane Heaven F3F-2 default textures. This paint represents the Naval F3F-2 of VF-4 on board the USS Ranger in the texture.4 folder. The textures are in 888-8 and DXT3 formats, so choose your poison.

There is no need to alter the aircraft.cfg if you wish to use my textures in lieu of the default textures. Simply extract the textures in your format of choice in the Microsoft Games > Flight Simulator 9 > Aircraft > AH_Grumman_F3F > texture.4 folder and overwrite when prompted.

Looks nice. Was the fuselage color back then polished metal or silver paint?

Frank,

There has been conjecture on the paint or lack thereof on the fuselages of F3Fs for decades abd it appears shall be forever.

On these repaint, I am merely using what Aeroplane heaven used, incorrect if it may be, as basis.

Up until sometime in 1937 all Navy fuselages and metal surfaces were painted in Light Gray, afterward they fuselages were left in unpainted aluminum skin, which would fade some with time. But one has to remember the period. Planes were kept very clean by their ground crew. I expect that sea exposure would have effected the unpainted aluminum and at some time, an issue was sent out to paint them Aluminum lacquer. But for the purpose of my repaints, I left metal surface with a little Alpha shine. It took me five Alpha tries before I came up with an Alpha that suited me, with no strong reflections of the environmental bitmap, but rather smooth reflections. The base color for both the fuselage and wings and fabric surfaces is HEX 888888, shich is the HEX code for Silver at Simmer's paint Shop. The metal surfaces have an Alpha of 175, 175, 175; the other metal surfaces and the orange-yellow as well received a very light Alpha of 235, 235, 235. This is enough to make them sheen in lighting.

Another default texture will be sent up shortly, I think I have three more to go, but I hate the 1941 Navy Trainer, I think I shall replace that with something more livable.

Willy, don't s'pose ya have a photo or profile, does ya?

I don't know what all that means but they sure look good.

Funny you hate the early paint schemes because I actually like them. They look good and it's as if they were saying, "here we are now do something about it" lol. I remember making a plastic model of this aircraft and painting it in this scheme. It has always stood out as my favorite model. I hung it over my bed with fishing line. I can remember staring at it when my mother put me to bed long long ago. I also loved the way the gear retracted on this plane for some reason. Nothing else I know like it (except for the cat of course, but that's just an F3 with a wing cut off ;))
