After reading the NickN's comprehensive config and tweak guid mentioned here, I am having serious second thoughts about going for the HIS 4870 or 4890 1GB card. NickN warned about ATI and ATI drivers particularly in heavy weather. Luciano of WideView also told me that he preferred the GTX295 or GTX285.

I have searched the forum for comparison threads and I noted some excellent feedback for ATI as well as "will never have ATI" comments. How badly does the ATI 4870 perform in weather or big scenery?

Also, could someone please point me in the right direction to Ted's ATI set up - sorry I have somehow failed to find it...

Teds guides are long gone with the hack..

here are mine...http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=16294

Some shots on my 410 dollar rig of my 3850 512 ATI card in weather with FEX... I have no FSX tweaks and my frames are locked at 35 and stay at 35 ...Never had a problem with ATI...Now remember..My lowly 3850 is just 512, and not as good as the 4870 or 4890

Thanks Harleyman.

Sorry I had not realised I was already reading your guide and I am relieved as I was half dreading a overwhelmingly technical piece on actually assaulting the GPU. :redf:. NickN's guide has sent me back to check what sort of DDR3 I have picked as well. I think I am going to experiement with the wideview server first, will feed back. Thanks again.

How do I compare different makes with the same GPU and RAM? What should I look for when it comes to just running FSX?

I am looking at the HIS 4870 1GB, HIS 4890 1BG and the same made by MSI - they look so similar.

About all you can do about that is read reviews from customers, and see how well they worked out the box, or was it DOA, and if so was it handled bt the company fast and effortless..

BUT...Here thats been done..And HIS wins there ....
