Antialiasing

My online search for doing antialiasing in GIMP continues. Nowhere is a simple "how to" available. I suppose that mght mean it is not that simple after all. Some people said that one could blur the jagged edges of a GIMP image using the blur/smudge tool, but that too didnt work for me.

Is there anybody here who knows how to do antialiasing in GIMP so that I can get a smooth circle? Please give me some simple instructions in how to do this.

Hey Sid,

What kind of a circle are you trying to draw?

To draw the circle on the left of the screenshot that has a fill colour you use the 'Eclipse Select Tool' and then use the 'Paintbrush Tool' or 'Bucket Fill Tool' to drop in the colour you want.

When selecting the 'Eclipse Select Tool' you will notice that Gimp gives you a bunch of settings at the bottom of the 'Toolbox' that include 'Antialiasing' and 'Feather edges'. If you untick 'Antialiasing' then you will have jagged edges. If you tick 'Feather edges' then you will have feathered edges that you can adjust depending on how much you would like the edge of the circle to feather into the rest of your image.


To draw the circle on the right of the screenshot that has just an outline you use the 'Eclipse Select Tool' again but this time you convert the selection to a path by going to 'Select --> To Path'. From there you go to 'Edit --> Stroke Path...' and then set the parameters, like line width, in the 'Stroke Path' window that pops up.

Note: Anti-aliasing should already be selected but you can confirm by checking in the window that pops up.

There is probably an easier method but I have found that this works for me - I hope it helps :)
