Any Chance for a C-46

The Curtis C-46 is an awesome WWII bird and would look great in FSX. As far as I know there are no payware quality C-46's available. Something of the MJ C-47 quality would certainly round out my WWII vintage hanger. :)

Try Libardo Guzman's freeware C-46 and don't ever expect a payware quality one.

By payware quality I'm referring to MJ's team and their work on the Basler, C-117D and C-47. :)

... don't ever expect a payware quality one.

Yes, why? There is no reason I'm aware of that a few people couldn't get one in hand. If you meant "don't ever expect a payware quality C-46" then I can understand that, but there have been so many beautiful surprises in FSX modelling that a "Whale" might yet surface.

It's definitely another classic that deserves a breath of virtual life in FSX! :)

I've been using Libardo's C-46 in both of my FS9 and FSX installs of Nicolson's CBI scenery (cbiv7 and CBIXv1 respectively) while flying the aircraft lost missions from Chick Marrs Quinn's "THE ALUMINIUM TRAIL". I'm just into March 44 and have something like 250 hours dealing with the "rock pile". Libardo's is the best we have right now, but a native FSX C-46A would be excellent to fly alongside the C-87 and C-109 add-ons from Virtavia for their Alpha/Virtavia B-24 and both MAAM's and Manfred's C-47 family. (With those aircraft, you could fly nearly all of the transport lost aircraft missions.)

Here's a shot of a couple natural metal repaints (The Gonzalez repaint is very highly polished) and my Dad's C-46A ,#7135, as it climbs out of Chabua, India in the Assam Valley, just approaching "First Ridge" (the Patkai Range) on it's way over the Hump ... destination, Kunming, China.

Do we really need a FSX native C-46 Commando? AB-SO-LUTELY!!!!!

I've been using Libardo's C-46 in both of my FS9 and FSX installs

It has an ok exterior which is easy to paint. I tried to find a happy medium with the shine but just can't get to the look of the MJ series of planes. Seems it's not enough reflection or unrealistic mirror surfaces. I have no clue how to make bump or spec maps and maybe that's what it needs.
I can't bear to fly it it with that VC, no dis-respect to the authors is meant, but in my OP I mentioned "payware quality" and to me the VC has a huge role in that aspect.
Maybe after suitable rest the MJ team can come together one more time, crossing fingers & toes! :)

The C-46 was an exceptional aircraft but one developed in one of the periods of rapid transition/advancement in technology that quickly overshadowed it.

It always reminds me of a pregnant DC-3.

Bill Kestell, was your father a CBI Hump veteran? So was mine. Spent time in Jorhat and Chabua among other places. He started out as a crew chief and then was assigned to an engine change crew on C-87s. I was surprised to find his name mentioned in a 1944 'CBI Roundup' newspaper article I found on the internet. Seems his crew set a record by changing 38 engines in 19 days.

The freeware C-46 ported into FSX works well. I find the exterior and VC bearable visually (it is freeware) but the handling and flight model is first class - allowing you to make challenging landings doing Buffalo Air type missions in the cold north. As great as MJ & Teams's new C-117 and C-47 are, I find the C-46 still rivals them when choosing an aircraft (WWII era piston transport) for doing these types of flights.

@C87 ... yes he was, 1st LT William A. Sylvester. He made his last flight on 16 March 1945, 10 days before I was born. He wasn't scheduled to fly that day, but when a buddy went on sick call, he took the flight as co-pilot. (I suppose he wanted to bank as many hours in as short a time possible, like so many aircrew did, so they could rotate home sooner).

Well, they lost an engine somewhere between Chabua and Kunming and the pilot overshot Kunming field and crashed on the go-around ... no survivors.

Ever since I got into FSX and got my CBI setup going, I always fly is last mission on 16 March as a tribute and he is the primary reason that I'd like to see a first-rate C-46 in FSX ... either standard or acceleration, as I have both set up for the CBI.
