It's probably a safety issue Mathias. The shed is where the fishermen hide the dynamite they use for their nighttime fishing expeditions. You wouldn't want to smoke around there, would you?

Anytime you want you can pop over here and have a pint and a cigar onmy deck (bring the pints) :ernae:

OK, I've proved to myself that it will work. What all four of the above items has in common is Oban, Scotland. During WWII, the Coastal Command had a number of very active Seaplane stations and RAF Oban was one of the busiest and most multi-national of the bunch. Danes, Aussies, Norwegians, and Brits all flew out of Oban and it was the site of the first Catalina training for the Cats that saw European Theater action. Everything from Sunderlands to Catalinas and quite a few other models in between were seen in the skies and in the water. Across from Oban, in Ardentive Bay on the Island of Kerrera was a slip and a ship repair facility that was pressed into service as the maintenance end of the seaplane base. The house above is the Dungallan House it was a the local Coastal Command HQ and RAF Oban HQ as well.

A bit further to the north is Ganavan Sands, another Seaplane base.


I'm about done with the military stuff in Oban, and will endeavor to make a little of Oban proper and Ganavan sands later. This should be out in a couple of weeks or so, hopefully around the same time Aerosoft delivers the first Cats.

Don't know how much info you have on Oban / Kerrera,
or whether the following might provide any additional info.

The seaplane base site is now occupied by Oban Marina & Oban Yachts.

I'd sailed into and stayed/explored Kerrera several times.

I was aware of it's history.
just wished I'd paid more attention to the site details/layout.

Thanks Paul. The main pier is no different from the 1940's to now. There is an addition that sort of spiders off of it and the squadron offices are still there as well. When I put it together I'll make sure folks can remove a single .bgl for the stuff that is no longer there. I have enlisted the help of Neil Owen who is the director of the War and Peace Museum in Oban for photos from the 40'e and he has been more than helpful.

The ScotFlight scenery for the area adds a lot on the Oban Side, but just corrects the shoreline on Kerrera. I'm making it so it's compatible with the ScotFlight as well as the default sceneries.

Many thanks for considering the 'current' environment users.
Much appreciated.

War & Peace museum data would be most useful.
That Luftwaffe photo should provide a correlating snapshot.

Scotflight adds the key feature models (Oban, folly, etc.)
and substantially improves the coastlines in these locales.

From the Google search screenies -
Were those two large sheds
post-war additions
or existing during conflict ?

Thought at least one might posibly be a/c related.

From your previous posting,
although the base itself was called RAF Oban

Was anything, including moorings,
actually located on the Oban shoreside,
or was everything on Kerrera / in Ardentrive bay ?

I for one still code for CFS2...that is no bed of roses when you get to look at the things we can do currently for FSX.

One of these days the 3rd party people will find something else to code for... and leave FSX behind.... like they left CFS2 behind but for a few hard core people.

Actually, the Dungallan House (headquarters) is on the Oban side and downhill from it was the RAF Pier. The New Caledonian was Officer's quarters and two other local Hotels were used as enlisted housing. I believe the offices on the shipyard were the 10 Sqd offices while the Mount Pleasant House on Kerrera was the 422 SQN Office. Generally speaking, you lived in Oban and Worked across the bay on Kerrera or north at Ganavan Sands.

The two large buildings at the Shipyard/Marina are indeed post war additions. The few remaining buildings still on site that remain are the marina offices (formally the squadron offices) and the shed along the same side which were (and probably still are) workshops.
