Ultimate Rig

XLRB,
I just this month got a i7 2600K put together. Especially for FSX (got tired of 9 fps). MB is Asus P8H67-M Pro Rev 3.0. I am running XP SP2 right now with 8 Gig Ram (Super*Talent DDR3/1333 Dual Channel Kit-2x4 Gb) with no problems. XP only uses aprox 3 Gb of that Ram, but I plan to get Win 7 Pro 64 bit next month (taped out). The video card, a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 Gb ($150) surprised me. I get bukku fps in FSX on unlimited with sliders 95% maxed out. But, I lock it to 30 fps (and get 30.1 fps (hehe)). I did the venetubo (Jesus FSX tweak) auto online tweak for FSX.cfg file. Worked very good. Did not overclock yet. It runs at 3.4 Ghz. Also did not flash the MB bios (danger of messing it up is very possible-voids MB warranty-can't afford that! The flashing itself does it. Read up on it in forums. Go figure. Bogus. So I'm leaving it 'as is' and not overclocking.) My PSU is only (Corsair) 600 Watt anyway, so don't want to 'push' anything (just yet). Running rig at 'Default' speeds=FSX=100 FPS!! I am VERY satisfied.

I have SATA WD Caviar Black (7200 rpm), 1 Tb, as C: drive for programs and videos and SATA 320 Gb WD Caviar Blue (7200 rpm) for D: drive just for FS9 and FSX. I got a LiteOn 20X DVD/CD 'Super Allwrite'. Also 2 fans, an Acer 23 in LCD monitor ($160) and Logitech K360 wireless keyboard/mouse combo ($45). Grand Total: $1300 US dollars. But I am a happy camper. Its the last PC I will ever own/build (as I'm 72 yrs old this coming May) and if it goes, before I go, I will just go back to my Pentium 4 (3.2 Ghz) and fly FS9 (hehe). I could of spent the money on a Vegas (gambling) trip, or a large screen TV, but spending it on a TOP NOTCH rig such as the i7 2600K was the best decision I made all year. Or next. Paid cash, so saving on credit card charges. It's a done deal. I already (since Feb 2) have 132 Gb of Fraps videos (I'm a Fraps video nut). Cheers. Hope this helps. I know I THOUGHT about it all year 2011 and when it 'happened' in 2012 I did not even get a stomach ache or headache. Felt good, in fact. So 'GO FOR IT' is all I have to say. My latest video is of Kaz Ito's 'BatWing in FSX'. Link: http://youtu.be/Ef1Tdb-XlRI .

You got me looking at Intel's road map! :icon_lol:

Looks like they have a new series coming out in April.... Ivy Bridge.... so you may want to wait until then and you will probably see a price drop.

I am looking to upgrade as well since the i7 930 I am rockin is the weak link in my system now.

Looks like i7-3770K is in the sites

I upgraded my system about 6 weeks ago. Ripped out my Q6600, motherboard, memory and both hard drives.

Installed this:

i5-2500K @4.2Ghz OC - GA-P67A-UD7-B3 - 8GB Corsair 1600mHz DDR3 - GeForce GTX260
2 x Hanns-G HX191 19" LCD - Saitek X-45 - Pro Yoke 2xQuads - WD Caviar Black 1 TB and 750 GB SATA III

I was running at 4.3 Ghz but backed off to 4.2 Ghz when I had a couple of unexplained BSOD's. Haven't had
any problems since then.

I used this site to set the various overclock parameters. Took about 5 minutes to go from the stock 3.3 Ghz to 4.3 Ghz :)

I'm running FSX in Win7 x64 with most all sliders maxed out and FR locked at 30 FPS.

I'd wait for Ivy Bridge... promises to deliver more performance at nearly the same cost of the 2500K

But yeah I love my SB 2500k...

sorry to take so long to reply back.

Thanks for all the info, some great info. In all honestly my i7-975 at 4.2 (had it at 4.8 but ran warm)water cooled runs FSX great with slider maxed out with frames around 80 at carswell (KNFW). But my son wants to buy this computer. So I told him I would have to see how a SB cpu runs FSX. I know the SB cpus rock in games, but FSX is not a game per-say. I figured the best place to find info about FSX and SB is here at SOH.

The good folks over at toms and overclockers.net where I've been a member for years keep telling me I would have to go to a 2600k,2700k to match my 975 performance. But most don't run FSX. I asked about the Ivory bridge but many think the cpu are beginning to level off in performance with Intel.
