but lurk a bit....This is what I am using....I'd recommend going for a socket 939 AMD 4800+ dual core processor. I had one in my old Alienware system...overclocked to 2.8GHZ without breaking a sweat and ran rings around the single core FX-55.
Bear in mind that the modern Intel C2D chips will easily outperform the AMD socket 939 chips...and will be cheaper and easier to find to boot. Downside is you'll need a new motherboard and memory.

...although it is a few years since I had that system. I was running the AMD 4800 chip on an Asus A8N-32 motherboard and I upped the voltages and FSB in order to achieve a stable 2.8GHZ. The system originally came with a Coolit Freezone liquid cooling system...but I removed that and stuck on a stock FX-60 heat sink fan and got better results!!:d. Don't go too mad with the voltages or you'll fry your chipI'm using a 4200+ dual core on that board and a BFG 7800GTX OC 512 MB card
