SOH-CM-2026

On 13 March 2026, in Toowoomba (Queensland, Australia), the CAC CA-12 Boomerang A46-54 of the Australian Greg Batts, registered VH-MHB and christened Wizard of Aussie, returned to the air for its first new post-restoration test flight with Scott Taberner at the controls. This stage marks the culmination of forty years of reconstruction.
Built during the Second World War, the Boomerang A46-54 had been assigned to No. 83 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force, under code MH-B, and engaged in missions for the defense of the Australian Northern Territory. His last flight was in September 1945, when he was ferried to Tocumwal Airfield, Victoria, for scrapping.
If the plane was largely scrapped, the fuselage survived and passed into the hands of several owners before being acquired by Gregg Batts in 1986 from Les Arthur, known for gathering elements from at least seven Boomerangs from different sites across Australia.
Restored with great historical fidelity during the following decades, the VH-MHB is today the first reconstructed wood-framed Boomerang to be reflown since 1945. This return in flight now brings to three the number of CAC Boomerangs in flying condition in Australia.
