AW Whitley Mk V of Bomber Command

Mark,

I am testing your Whitley right now. The date is 11 June, 1940. The crew was served "Haddock" for dinner. If I can fly the mission without running out of avgas, I'll tweak more.

Rami,

Your aircraft.cfg still has a four-bladed prop. I've been working with Pepe on an airfile, after struggling to get a base file for the other Whitleys myself.

By changing where record 473 crosses the x-axis you can force CFS2 to recognise the wing incidence, but it makes trim problematic. Also if you plug in the published dimensional & engine data you end up with an aircraft that struggles to roll at all when fully loaded, however once in the air she will climb like a rocket & range is 20% better than quoted. Methinks some judicious editing might be necessary.:a1310:

PS - the cutaway drawings show only a small central tank above the main wing spar, so I think all the extra fuel might need to be put into the wings. I ended up creating separate air & dp files for early & late MkVs. Early uses the wing cells for bombs, late uses Shessi's MkV CC model & uses the wing cells for fuel.

I'm beginning to think the 7000lb bomb load might only be possible with a much reduced fuel load (hence the short range), & that might mean a third airfile is necessary for max bombload missions...

UncleTgt,

I was able to make it back to Gurensey with fuel remaining. A quick and dirty solution would be to increase the propeller and piston engine scalars to 1.05 or 1.1, to see if that helps takeoff performance. Another option would be to add a takeoff WEP option.

The only consequence of this is that the range will be reduced, whilst climb rate and top speed will increase.

One other question...how in the hell do you counter the vicious takeoff torque?

Wide 2D panel for the Whitley...

Here's an addition that might interest Uncle TgT or Shessi...

UncleTgt,

If you can dig up the information I need, I can try fiddling with it. The more details I have, the better the results will be.

I've got the wing area, fuselage length, and wingspan down cold.

What I'm looking for, as an example, are the wing root chord, elevator, aileron, and vertical stabilizer surface areas, span of the horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and that type of info.

Also, the wing configuration is set as a biplane!

Shessi....

The Whitley Mk V is just fine. No problems that I can find. There is something about the AI version that I must be missing. When I set it up in a mission as an enemy AC it just loses altitude and crashes. I started out in an Me-109 (Player) just behind a group of 5 Whitley AIs flying level at 10,000ft. All of them seemed to fall out of the sky. When I substituted the Mk V non AI, there was no such problem.

I had that problem with the PBY4 Privateer, also. Substituted the B24 airfile renamed to PBY4 and it worked just fine afterward.

Perhaps a B25 air file?

no the AC's DP file is there. I'm looking for the weapons DP files. I wanted to look at the setup for the leaflets but there is no DP.

Hi BH,
There's no DP for the leaflets. It's not needed for a non-interacting ie non-exploding weapons bgl.

If you wanted to make something else out of the leaflets 'weapon' or have a specific reaction then please go ahead and tweak away, just have to add a modified weapons DP.

Cheers

Ok that explains that. I'm working on the rescue canister for the Italian weapons pack and wanted to see what you did. Now I know.

I also want to do the MVG's 2kg submunitions and my 4lb incendiaries. Your leaflet approch is what I'm looking at.

I have to work tonite, but if I send you my 4lb incendiaries, do you thing you could help me figure out a good setup?

I'll send you and email with a copy of the models and a write up of what I want to try and do.

Shessi you don't use GMax do you. Hummmmm...

Uncle TGT is flying my new airfile...

It is flying well with correct Merlin settings and with the typical nose down attitude. As the real beast, it has a strong LEFT torque effect at take off. The speed is almost the same of the real aircraft, but it can fly a little higher and further than the metal Whitley...

Today, I flew in QC and it behave well

Cheers

Pepe
