Battleship Texas is taking on water

I think these old battlewagons would be better off out of the water in a land-locked berth, like Admiral Togo's flagship Mikasa at Yokosuka. That's exactly what should happen to the USS Olympia before it deteriorates to the point where she can no longer be preserved.

Hi Willy,

I sure hope they get oil and water pumped out inorder to repair the leaks, we have lost to many great ships in the country, that just maybe some could have been saved, one in question was the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier of WWII
:USA-flag:
OK, I'll get off the soap Box.

Agree they need to get these ships out of the water. Put them on stands, like 1/1 scale models, hehe. That photo of the men with hoses on the deck grating - I was there! It's in the engineering spaces. That was such a fun ship to visit.

Rgr Taco!!

It may interest you to know the sky control station off the original USS Enterprise of WWII fame was supposed to have been salvaged from the ship prior to its destruction and mounted on the top of one side of the stadium in, I believe, Baltimore, MD where the Naval Academy plays West Point. They couldn't save the rest of the ship but Halsey and others tried to raise enough money to at least have that bit of superstructure saved for posterity. They couldn't raise enough even to save that. In the end I believe only three portholes were saved from CV-6 to go into CV-65.

The Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola used to have a porthole and other artifacts from the original aircraft carrier Enterprise. As far as I know, it's still there. But having those artifacts is nothing like being able to walk the decks of the actual ship.

I'm not sure why any of are old Battleships are still in the water but for the Iowas.

When it comes to the Olympia and Texas I would be begging any one with a Drydock large enough for them to use it.

This would be the second time the USS Texas, as a museum, started to sink at the pier. They had to raise an bunch of money, and got help from the navy, to dry dock her and get her fixed up. It would probably cost a small fortune to build a dry dock to display her in, which is why we don't see that so much. Heck, the Alabama is already resting on the bottom. You can't even go down into the engineering spaces, since they're full of water.

It's sad to see these ships left to deteriorate over time, I wish there were more people willing to help keep them around. The last I heard the Olympia was pretty much stuck where it is because they would have to dredge a channel to the nearest drydock just to get it there and there wasn't enough money around to do it, so they were considering turning it into an artificial reef. Sad to think that could happen to the world's oldest surviving steel hulled warship.

In order to make the Olympia a artificial reef they would still have to dredge a channel anyway....
