Been a long time

I't's been a long time since I messed with CFS1 and I don't remember is there a way to scroll (pan) smoothly around 360 degrees with the hat switch like I can do on most all my other Microft sims? I have a CH stick with hat switch and on CFS3, FS9 (not sure about CFS2) I can pan around the cockpit smoothly,(have to have the scroll lock on for CFS3)
I can pan around in external view but not in cockpit view. The best I can do is set the hat switch for left, right,up, and down ,but you have to keep hitting the switch to make it move , rather than just hold it down ,like in the other sims.
Thanks

Panning View Commands

Pan Left: CNTRL+SHIFT+BACKSPACE

Pan Right: CNTRL+SHIFT+ENTER

Pan Up: SHIFT+BACKSPACE

Pan Down: SHIFT+ENTER

Snap Front: CNTRL+SPACEBAR

Snap Rear: CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR

I believe that you would have to program your hat switch as a continuous Macro with the CH Control Manager. I personally just put in the various views on 2 of my Hats....

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the info, since I don't know how to program the CH hat switch as a continuious macro ,I'll take the easier way and just use it to pan in the VC mode,(although I have to keep hitting the switch to move around) and use the commands you mentioned other wise.
I have to be careful not to try and pan in the 2d mode cause then I go from one wingtip to the other then straight back ,but can't get back to panel view unless I reset to default and restart the sim. The hat switch must be set to some command that makes it do this but don't know what.
I didn't realise how far sims have come in that with the other Microsoft sims I can pan continuously in VC mode( CFS2 also), thanks again

Thanks minuteman

I've got the guide printed out ,but think I'am a little to dumb ,at my age I gotta keep things simple. But I'll try rereading it maybe I can pick something up the second time.I do use the control manager for calibration all the time.

Welcome back

Can't help with the CH problem, Minuteman is the best !
Just wanted to welcome you to the "basement" along with the "Pilots of the Round Table" and the "Order of the Sims".

Scan back a few threads and you will figure that one out.

Thanks No Dice

Thanks for the welcome,it's no big problem ,it's juat the way sims used to be.I can live with it,I still have a soft spot(maybe my head) for CFS1 it was my first flight sim and has been on my HD for as long as I've had puters,(except the Commodor 64 of course)
It's been a long time since I flew it and I've forgotton most of how I had it sit up.
Thanks again for the welcome.

~S~ Hurri....What is your setup? (Stick, pedals, throttle?) If I can figure out how to make it work, I could create a "map" for you. It will only work for CH products though...:wavey:

Minuteman,
Hurricane is wind," trustme I know being from Biloxi". We should welcome Hurricane3 as the " Wind Maker of the Pilots of the Round Table" of the" Order of the Sims".

Welcome " Wind Maker" at least you don't wear a green skirt and wear a scrub brush on your helmet.

Hurricane:
Please see previous threads , it will all "not" make any sense, but we do have fun "down here"

Thankyou Minuteman

Thankyou for your very kind offer ,but I'll just stick with using my CH Fighter stick and setting autorudder for this one sim. I have the whole nine yards I use on my other sims, CH throttle Quad,Rudder pedals, usb throttle pro(i use this for jets and helios, and the ch yoke, which has the throttle mixture and prop controls ,will work in CFS1 ,I guess cause it's one unit.
So I'am satisfied using the stick, auto rudder and control yoke,(I use it the the Cold War addon from Just Flight I have installed ,for the bombers)
At my age I just want to keep things as simple as possable so for CFS1 I'll use just the two types of controllers, stick and yoke.
Thanks again for the offer.

~S~ Wind Breaker....You're more than welcome! I'll tinker around with it and let you know if I can make it work. If I can find the correct Command, you can always assign it to a button on your Fighterstick...Sweet setup by the way!:icon_lol:

hello h3,
i've been thinking about this for a bit
and finally got around to checking it out.
i realize that the VC in CFS1 is pretty rough,
but i think you can get what you want there.
...with a little work.
as i see it, there are 3 issues to deal with;

1) the CFS VC is not developed very well.
it's very rudimentary in appearance.
sorry, that's the way it is,
so we have to accept it for what it is.

2) when you pan around in VC
it moves way to fast. (my opinion here)
the PAN_RATE can be slowed down substantially.
open the COMBATFS.CFG with Notepad
scroll down to [CONTROLS]
then, scroll down to PAN_RATE=400
i changed mine to PAN_RATE=50
play around with it and find something you like.
don't forget to save the changes
Ctrl+S works if you don't want to use the menu.

3)when panning in VC and you let up on the hat switch,
your view is stuck a that point...not good.
i take care of this by assigning a stick button
that is next to the hat switch
to Snap to front view
this command is default to keyboard CTRL+Space
if you don't want to take up a stick button,
but i like it close to the hat.

there you go...
i hope this helps

mine seems to wrk differently

First, I can only pan smoothly in external view, second, I can only pan in the cockpit in VC mode and then I have to keep hitting the hat switch to pan ,if I let up on the hat switch the view stays where I last left it until I hit the switch again then continuse,Third in 2D cockpit view if I try to pan it goes from right wingtip to left and rear view and misses the panel view altogether, I figure this is cause I have the assignments wrong ,then I have to hit Ctrl+ Space to snap to the panel. Lastly, since I can only pan around the cockpit in VC mode without getting stuck and I have to keep hittting the hat switch continually ,the pan rate isn't too fast as it stops between my hits of the hat switch.
I hope I was clear enough in this post ,I'am not sure I would understand what I just said if I were reading it the first time.
So bottom line is I'am satisfied with the way it's set up now, as you said ,you just have to live with somethings the way they are ,cause this is an old sim.
Thanks so much for trying to make things a little better ,but you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, or something like that.

hello h3,
yes, i agree,
you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear
but, i just can't help myself,
i like to play with the assignments.

i get the same thing in external view,
nice smooth panning.
in VC, if i push and hold the hat to the right,
it will smoothly pan clockwise until i let off,
then, it will stop.
this is where CTRL+Space brings it back to front,
or in my case, pushing a stick button.
further, if i push and hold the hat to the left,
it will smoothly pan counterclockwise until i let off.
pushing forward rotates it forward and
pushing back, rotates it backwards.
if you have to keep clicking the hat to get it to move,
check Assignments, and make sure that
Buttons 34, 35, 36, 37, 38. 39 & 40
all have the Repeat boxes checked.
also, make sure Button 41 is assigned to Reset view to front
with the Repeat box unchecked.

oh yeah, i only had to reread your post a few times

repeat works

For some reason ,although the CH control manager show 8 positions for the hat swith only four are avalible, 35, 33,37,and 39, but by checking the repeat buttons as you said I can now pan all around ,up and down ,left right and rear with no problems, my stick is and older one so the hat switch must have only 4 positions, but it works just like yours with the repeat boxes checked ,I have buttons assigned to other things so it's no big deal to hit CTRL+Backspace ,but I only have to do this in the 2D mode. Thanks a bunch for getting my pan to go with out continously hitting the pan switch. It' also will pan to the front in VC without hitting CTRL+backspace.
I had a devil of a time at first when I went back to CFS1 with the views getting stuck in one place and couldn't figure out how to get back to panel view, but now everything works like my other sims in VC mode. Thanks again

good news, glad to help.
now all we need to do
is get that hat to show the corners.

just for grins,
go to SETTINGS>Game controllers>Properties
slowly move your hat switch around
and see if the arrow points to 8 positions.
if it does, we can get the corners for you.

if the test above worked,
try this;
go to settings>customize controls>assignments,
scroll down and highlight
View forward right/pan up right
under Device, not Keyboard,
and push your hat switch to the 1-2 o'clock position.
if we are lucky,
Button 34 should appear.

if that works,
let me know and we'll do the rest.
we can also do it manually
in the COMBATFS.CFG file if necessary.

are ya having fun yet?

really no need

There is really no need to go to all that, because my hat swich does show corners in VC mode, like I said I can pan all around the VC cockpit even the corners with just the four buttons, it's the same with all my sims, can't explane why but it works in all directions

okey, dokey
if you're okay with it,
that's all that matters.

have fun.
be careful, though.
some of the guys around here
will probably try to get you to fly
multi-player with them on Sundays.
